Jon Burge Trial Date Set
CHICAGO (AP) -- A federal judge has scheduled a January trial for former Chicago police supervisor Jon Burge, who's accused of lying under oath about the use of torture to question suspects.
U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow told attorneys at a hearing Wednesday that Jan. 11 is "a firm date" for the trial to begin.
Burge is charged with lying on written answers to a civil rights lawsuit when he said he and detectives under his command never engaged in activities such as "bagging." That refers to allegations that officers covered a suspect's head with a plastic typewriter cover until he couldn't breathe.
Prosecutors say they'll need about three weeks to present their case.
