New York Post:

In 2009, there were nearly 115 million TV homes in the US, each averaging 2.86 TV sets, according to a new Nielsen study.

That computes to nearly 329 million TV sets -- more than the entire US population, estimated at 307 million by the US Census Bureau.

"If somebody looked at what the cost of an average TV was in the 1960s and looked at the inflation-adjusted cost of an average TV today, it's a quarter of the real cost. "

Yes, but the 1960's is a pretty long time ago. That was when color TV was just starting to replace black and white. Of course, those new color sets commanded a premium price.

By the early 1990's TV sets had become a lot more affordable. Unfortunately, with flat panels replacing CRT's, it has become hard to find a reasonably priced set. A typical set twenty years ago cost less than a typical set of comparable size today, even when adjusting for inflation.

I use 22 inch LCD computer screens in my house it a lot cheaper. For the price of one small HDTV and a few VGA/DVI box I got screens in three room. Total cost around 500$ because I already own one out of three screens that I installed.

Should have rephrase that to. "For the price of one HDTV I got three screens and all I needed to add was a few VGA/DVI box."

But 22 inches is pretty small for a living room or den, and don't you have to have a TV tuner built into the monitor? Can you receive cable TV or broadcast TV on the monitor?

I blame flat screen. They take so less place you can afford to have one in rooms where you would not have considered it ten years ago.

I grew up in Germany, and as a child our TV stations would not even start until 17:00hrs, and then it was one show for kids, usually Lassie or something American. I remember not all of us had a TV at home, so we had one neighbor who let us watch these shows, but: " only once a week because TV makes children dumb" as many of our parents used to say. Oh well, those were also the times when parents still threatened to take away our books because that is where we "learned" this disobedience...
I raised my children with one TV show the most per day, and that was on PBS commercial free, and now I am raising my grandchild the same way. She does not even know that she is missing something, unless kids talk about TV characters that we do not know...

pity about the programming content. same in the UK it has become reality dross, bring back real programming, the UK show panorama does shy away from showing the real issues of the day, the journalists are not afraid to report wht is really happening...
which keeps soem Govt scandals in check...but not all.
financials scandals are continuous in USA, as media is only interested in Interns, etc..

I sometimes have 2 or 3 screens running at once when live TV is on. Multiple screens are much better than picture-in-picture. It helps to avoid nearly all commercials. I can keep and eye on the ballgame while watching a bit of something else. Movies or High Quality TV (Mad Men, Breaking Bad) are always watched after the fact to skip the ads. TV's answer to all this ad skipping is more ads! NFL football is almost unwatchable live with all the ads. I would get a DVR but I do not want to pay a monthly fee to use it.

I have no idea why this is surprising. Most people I know have more televisions in their house than people.

More books, more radios, more pots and pans, What's the point?

I think the point is that TV, unlike books, radios, etc, tend to occupy time sans activity and don't truly add value or intelligence to your life, save a few programs with education value (History Channel, etc).

The more Americans become glued to the tube, the less likely it is that our average intelligence and overall health will trend upward. There are countless studies out there that indicate as such.
