Authorities line up rescued Chihuahuas in travel kennels as rescue and cleanup efforts entered a third day in Dearborn, Mich., Friday, July 24, 2009 where authorities say a man kept more than 100 dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, inside a home littered with feces and trash. City workers, along with Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter, removed 42 ailing and feces-covered dogs from the home Wednesday. They returned Thursday and found more than 60 more dogs and rescued at least seven on Friday. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

DEARBORN, Mich. — Police on Friday found about 150 dead dogs packed in freezers in the basement of a Michigan house littered with feces and trash where more than 110 live dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, were rescued this week.

Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said the 56-year-old man found Wednesday in the suburban Detroit home with the animals may have been living with an increasing number of dogs for up to three or four years.

"The house was in complete disarray, very cluttered and, with 100-plus dogs running around in there, very filthy," he said.

A criminal investigation was under way at the two-story brick home, Haddad said. He said the case could be forwarded to prosecutors for possible animal-cruelty charges.

Haddad said 112 live dogs had been removed from the home as of Friday, and police believe about five more may be hiding inside. He declined to release details about the breed of the dead dogs.

The man living in the house was taken to a local hospital for observation. He had no health insurance and a mental impairment that stemmed from rubella as a child, and had lived for years alone in the home after his parents retired to Florida, said lawyer James G. Schmier, who was acting as a family spokesman.

"I think this is a very human story of a guy who had some very severe mental issues," Schmier said.

Neighbors in the past had complained of an odor at the Dearborn home, which had a neatly cut lawn and manicured bushes. But this week was the first time officials got inside, and crews needed masks to breathe.

Trash was piled from floor to ceiling in places, and feces and urine was throughout the home. Forty-two ailing and feces-covered dogs were rescued Wednesday. Crews returned Thursday and found more than 60 dogs, and about 10 more were rescued Friday, police said.

The smell, noticeable from the street Thursday and Friday, may have been contained previously because windows were closed and covered.

The rescued dogs were taken to the Dearborn Animal Shelter, where residents brought dog food donations and filled out pet adoption applications. Sandra Boulton, a spokeswoman for the shelter, said the dogs were either Chihuahuas or Chihuahua mixes, and while most had long nails and fleas, they were relatively healthy.

People with no access to mental health care are living behind closed doors in our communities. They are invisible until something awful happens. Our health care system should have a safety net so that a 56-year old man get treatment for mental illness. It will cost less to treat him than to care for the next 100 dogs that he will attempt to keep.

He had mental problems, he's not another Michael Vick. I wonder why his parents would move out of state and leave him alone, knowing he had mental problems. How sad... I feel very sorry for him having to live like that.

I think it's great of those who are able to adopt the dogs from the animal shelter.

Very sad story, but what were the parents thinking, retiring to Florida with a mentally ill child that no one was checking up on. If the parents visited at least twice a year, this would not have happened, or at a minimum to the degree that it did. What did they do...just walk away from him? They should have ahd someone checking in on him every month.

This is a middle-age man, not a child. And his elderly parents didn't walk away from him. They let him live in one of their houses.

The guy needs help as I'm sure many people do but according to the Republican Party and the national media health insurance is a privilege not a right.
Keep voting for Republicans and those who support their ideals.

Funny, I started at the beginning of the Constitution where the preamble clearly states that on of the things we need to do to form a more perfect union is to promote the general welfare. I would put national health care under this heading. We have the power, we have the money, we have the energy in this great nation. Now - Let's have the will to make it happen!

Are you aware there's more to the Constitution than its first ten Amendments? Try the Preamble.

It's frightening to think about some of the unimaginably tragic things that occur each and every day behind closed doors of many homes throughout this country.

I agree, the mix of animal and human almost always leaves the animal abused or dead....I am really really tired of it

The California budget crisis has resulted in a draconian reduction in the amount of time animals are held in a shelter prior to euthanizing. They now have only 72 hours to find a home.

This man was clearly unstable, but his intentions were good. Maybe if more people stepped up and took just one shelter animal, it wouldn't be such a heartbreaking crisis.

Don't be too harsh. He is mentally unsound. While what happened was horrific, I do not think you can blame the man himself. I do not think his intentions were bad; he had a "mental impairment" and no health insurance to get the help he clearly needed.

Our Detroit Free Press ran a story today saying that this "animal hoarding" is very common. Humane societies are frequently called to check homes with 50 or more animals. People think they're saving animals and fail to see that they're putting the animals' health at risk.

Mental health professionals who were interviewed for the story said animal hoarders usually have OCD, and are trying to make everything right for the animals, but it spirals out of control.

It was also reported that his yard was well manicured (the photo attests to that - perfectly geometrical shrubs) and that he mowed for neighbors. Not an intentionally "bad" person.

The Dearborn Animal Shelter has received adoption applications for 100 of the dogs. Probably many more by now.

It was also reported that the house will have to be demolished.

This man is obviously very ill, was overwhelmed by his mental illness and everything got out of hand. He simply did not know which way to turn and has ended up with such a sad life. My heart goes out to him and to all the dogs who certainly did not deserve to live that way either.

This is not a Michael Vick story by any means.

Unfortunately for the dogs the outcome was not good for a large share of them no matter what the cause.

Maybe because the man is not the same race as VICK. Funny how we all rush to excuse this man but were quick to condemn VICK.

Is that a racial difference? OR a mental difference? And just who decides? A man who can do a good job cutting his lawn- could he be THAT mentally ill that he is unaware of issues with the dogs? Vick did a good job too, and I guess he wasn't intentionally BAD, maybe he was mentally disturbed?

Not wanting to hurt the man, but .....how DO WE KNOW this is NOT a Michael Vick story?

Now can Michael Vick go back to work. Where is PETA's outrage over this and over the documentary by HBO about hog farming and the abuse that goes on there. Those guys got a $50 fine and a good talking to. There is no comparison and you can see the irony in the reactions does not have to be stated.

Apparently the guy had mental problems. There's the difference and if you want PETA to do something I suggest you make a donation. They're not-for-profit and can only do so much with limited funds. They do an excellent job with what they have..

It seems as though PETA uses selective process (high-profile cases) to speak about. If their money was so limited then why the national ad campaigns. Seems as though advertising dollars would be better spent collectively defending animals not taking naked pictures of celebrities. I would not donate to PETA because the ethical treatment of humans is more important.

In addition PETA did take undercover cameras to the Hormel hog farms in (( think it was Texas) and was able to have charges placed against abusive employees and get Hormel to clean up it's act.

The hog farm was in Ohio and PETA did not say a word. It was done by a gentleman who is in one of the fringe animal activist groups (radical). If animal hoarding is a problem then PETA needs to change its mission and start supporting local animal shelters and animal refuges. Because after a certain time if those animals are not adopted they are euthanized.

There are many torturers of animals and some are in industries. Witness the video of turkeys being inhumanely slaughtered in front of the world during a Sarah Palin interview.
