I also check all of my cosmetics and skincare products in the database www.CosmeticsDatabase.comm) mentioned.

It's surprising to see the results...or to learn about make-up ingredients...animal parts, fossil fuels, even pepper spray.

Going "back to the basics" really appeals to me. Cosmetic toxins have been linked to everything from infertility to cancer.

(I report on it here: www.Twitter.com/EcoGlam)

great ideas here for homemade skin care, that is definitely the most ecological and safe way to go if you have the time and motivation to do it.

when you make your own products using good ingredients you know you are not getting all the chemicals used in so many products like this.

There are also a lot of good resources where you can learn more about this issue.

1. Skin Deep data base on the Environmental Working Group website:
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

2. Organic Consumers Coming Clean page:
http://www.organicconsumers.org/bodycare/index.cfm

there are becoming more and more companies in the market place that have a commitment to certified organic standards for their skin and body care lines.

Look for a third party organic certification to verify the organic claim for products like this.
without that, it's very hard to verify any organic claims. when the product has a third party organic claim that is verified it means the product meets the food standard for organic, since that is the only standard there is right now for organic.

In case you would like to know about another certified organic line you can view it here

with regards to "my thoughts" comment... I would like to inform you that REVOLUTION ORGANICS are in fact "USDA Certified" organic products. I invite you to check out their website at www.revolutionorganics.com see/read for yourself. I also would like to inform you that attaining a "USDA certification" is a rigourous process and is only awarded to those who meet the highest standards and criteria... I suggest that you read up on the process...

This is an irresponsible article. There are no regulations on cosmetics - their claims are bogus - they put in a little hint/drop of something and claim it's pure, etc.

Shame on you for writing this nonsense. Do your homework and some responsbile journalism.

The only thing that works for me - and it has kept my skin free of outbreaks, smooth as butter, with the "glow" of someone still looking forward to their 21st birthday (as a 32 year old, I can't say it is thrilling to need proof that I'm old enough to adopt a cat from the local shelter) - is a good layer of sweat from heart-pumping run or equivalent work-out almost daily. No other make-up or messy lotions needed. (My face has been unabashedly naked virtually its entire existence). Sweat has a natural acid that is antibacterial, and exercise lowers blood sugar levels - which prevents the adverse effects of insulin on unsightly skin condtions - and keeps you sprightly all over. It's failry cheap, and good for everyone's environment.

it's so easy to make a home made scrub with brown sugar and olive oil--just pour enough oil over the sugar (about 1/4 inch or so) and add an essential oil if you like, and voila, you've saved 15 to 20 dollars US on sugar scrub from stores like body and bath works.

So many things are so easy to do at home.

There are plenty of recipes on the net for salt and sugar scrubs. Put them in decorative bottles, and you've got great homemade gifts. Great for young kids to make for aunts, grandmas, and moms.

Easy to make soap, too.

Makeup is one of the biggest scams today. Comestics companies exist today because they have convinced women that they need thier products to look good. Some of the best looking females are ones that don't makeup.

Why wasn't Paula's Choice one of the options. Her cosmetics and body products are beautifully formulated and relatively inexpensive. She has been a leader in the natural and non toxic formulations and speaking out years ago on ingredients that do harm or add nothing to the product's effectiveness.

Given this admission and on review of the brands selected, I decided to pass.

That's true--I'm a fan of her products, but even more, love her empirical approach to cosmetics. She looks at the ingredients of a product (hers or a competitors) tells you what the INDEPENDENT research says, and gives you the straight answers. Natural does not mean better. She recommends the best products, even from other companies!!! Who else does that??
Just google Paula's Choice.
