Gates: It's Time To 'Move On' From Arrest

RUSSELL CONTRERAS   07/25/09 09:44 PM ET   AP

Henry Louis Gates

BOSTON — Black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. says he's ready to move on from his arrest by a white police officer, hoping to use the encounter to improve fairness in the criminal justice system and saying "in the end, this is not about me at all."

After a phone call from President Barack Obama urging calm in the aftermath of his arrest last week, Gates said he would accept Obama's invitation to the White House for a beer with him and Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley.

In a statement posted Friday on The Root, a Web site Gates oversees, the scholar said he told Obama he'd be happy to meet with Crowley, whom Gates had accused of racial profiling.

"I told the president that my principal regret was that all of the attention paid to his deeply supportive remarks during his press conference had distracted attention from his health care initiative," Gates said. "I am pleased that he, too, is eager to use my experience as a teaching moment, and if meeting Sergeant Crowley for a beer with the president will further that end, then I would be happy to oblige."

It was a marked change in tone for Gates, who in the days following his arrest gathered up his legal team and said he was contemplating a lawsuit. He even vowed to make a documentary on his arrest to tie into a larger project about racial profiling.

In an e-mail to the Boston Globe late Friday, he said: "It is time for all of us to move on, and to assess what we can learn from this experience."

In a statement to The Associated Press, Gates promised to do all he could so others could learn from his arrest.

"This could and should be a profound teaching moment in the history of race relations in America," Gates said. "I sincerely hope that the Cambridge police department will choose to work with me toward that goal."

Gates, 58, did not say in his statement if he planned to file a lawsuit.

Crowley did not return a telephone message seeking comment Saturday.

The outcry began Monday, when word broke that Gates had been arrested five days earlier at the two-story home he rents from Harvard.

Supporters called the arrest an outrageous act of racial profiling. Public interest increased when a photograph surfaced of the handcuffed Gates being escorted off his porch amid three officers.

Cambridge police moved to drop the disorderly conduct charge on Tuesday – without apology, but calling the case "regrettable."

Obama, who had said Cambridge police "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates, sought to tamp down the uproar Friday. He spoke to Crowley and Gates during separate telephone calls and declared that Crowley was a good man.

Obama invited the officer and the professor to the White House for a beer. He conceded his words had been ill-chosen, but he stopped short of a public apology.

A trio of Massachusetts police unions released a joint statement shortly after Obama's latest comments, saying Crowley had a friendly and meaningful conversation with the president.

"We appreciate his sincere interest and willingness to reconsider his remarks about the Cambridge Police Department," according to the statement. "It is clear to us from this conversation, that the President respects police officers and the often difficult and dangerous situations we face on a daily basis."

Gates added that he hoped his arrest would lead to a greater understanding about racial profiling in America.

"If my experience leads to the lessening of the occurrence of racial profiling, then I would find that enormously gratifying," Gates said on The Root. "Because, in the end, this is not about me at all; it is about the creation of a society in which 'equal justice before law' is a lived reality."

It's called the President wants this nation to think about what happens everyday in America about stuff like this but to move on to another big issue that is also killing America, health care insurance! The media took 2 minutes of his press conference and blew it up! The press conference was about health care. How could they miss that?

Race baiting was better for ratings! The media is so bogus.

Dear Professor Gates,
Please listen before you alter fates.
Do not let one’s pride,
Cause this great nation to divide.
Look at what is happening in such a short time,
What this is undoing is really the crime.
All across America people are upset,
Now I ask you Sir what good will all this get?
A learning lessons already taught,
So many people’s mending has been for naught.
A man has risen to lead us all,
Do not be a part of America’s fall.
This is the year of our lord, two thousand and nine,
So please do what you know to be divine.
One planet, one race, as one beating heart,
The world may end some day, please do not be the start.
We lead the world with freedom first,
Do not let racism quench it’s undying thirst.
To not enslave us all at last,
Lets look forward away from our past.
The mistakes we make and continue to do,
Could spell the end of more then me and you.
By bringing down our great nation,
All of this for the sake of sensation.
I ask you not to let our enemies see,
Such things may still live in the land of the free.
I love the different colors of man,
We were created according to plan.
So different and the same,
All of us with our own name.
Man and woman combine,
To create new life is so divine.

Exactly. Crowley acted very stupid to arrest a man after the man proved who he was an wanted the cops name and badge number. In his state a cop MUST provide that information when asked. Gates got pi$$ed off and resorted to name calling, in which the officer got pi$$ed in return and arrested him - but the charge had to be dropped as Gates committed no crime.

Hate Crimes Against Muslim Student at Arizona State a Hoax
By Sara Russo

Arizona State University junior Ahmad Saad Nasim was charged October 11th with two misdemeanor counts of false reporting to law enforcement, after he admitted fabricating two incidents of hate crimes in the days following the September 11th attacks on America. A religious Muslim who hails from Saudi Arabia but has held US citizenship for two years, Nasim's fake accusations created an atmosphere of panic on campus, and contributed to the flight of at least 51 international students, mainly from Middle Eastern nations, who feared for their safety at school.

Racial Threat Called Hoax of Unhappy Black Student

Chicago Tribune ^ | April 27, 2005 | Susan Kuczka, Lisa Black,Courtney Flynn, and Barbara Bell

Posted on Friday, April 29, 2005 3:14:18 AM by nickcarraway

A Trinity International University minority student unhappy about attending the school was charged with a hate crime after she confessed to sending racially threatening mail to minority classmates, prompting a temporary evacuation of black and Latino students from campus, authorities said Tuesday.

Alicia Hardin, 19, of Chicago, an African-American woman, was trying to convince her parents that the Bannockburn school was too dangerous for her, police said.

"We believe she wanted to attend a different college, and she thought if her parents saw Trinity as an unsafe environment, they'd let her transfer," Lake County Assistant State's Atty. Matthew Chancey said.

Hardin, who spent Monday night in Bannockburn's jail, also was charged with disorderly conduct. Bail was $5,000 in a brief hearing Tuesday at which she answered questions from Circuit Judge Victoria L. Martin with a soft, "Yes, Ma'am," or "No, Ma'am."

Hardin was released late Tuesday after her father, Lawrence Payton, posted bond, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said.

At Trinity, a Christian school, the atmosphere was one of shock and disbelief.

A handful of similar hoaxes have played out on other college campuses in the last five years, including some involving students who were Jewish, Muslim and African-American who falsely claimed to be victimized, said a former college administrator.

Well, at least this incident shows that Gates is both a b!got and a liar.

There is no mention of Gates" getting upset, belligerent or even aggravated during the incident in his official statement abt the incident.

The cops said Gates did get angry and loud but Gates" lawyer said no he didn"t:

Ogletree disputed the claim that Gates, who was wearing slacks and a polo shirt and carrying a cane, was yelling at the officer.

"He has an infection that has impacted his breathing since he came back from China, so he's been in a very delicate physical state," Ogletree said."

But Gates says later and contrary to his statement: "It is the fault of the policemen who couldn't stand a black man standing up for his rights, right in his face," Gates said on CNN.

Huh??? Your statement doesn"t say a thing about this.

Now Ogletree says that Gates told the cop that he ( Gates) was going to file a complaint against him.

Oh, really?? I would think that a Harvard law professor would include such a statement to show possible "retaliation " by the police.

But no, according to Gates" original statement there wasn"t an exchange of heated words, there was no issue about race, just Gates irritation that the cop did not give him his name or badge #, which the cop disputes.

Mr. Gates" the cop report stands by itself, answer why you and your attorney keep changing your story?

Reason ???? You l!ed.

I have had police at my home several times. .They came at night while sleep. They acted really ugly even though I was respectful. They barged right in and started searching the place and gave me no respect at all. Never even said they were sorry. The third time I got a really decent officer he treated me like a person and sad the police would not bother me again. The third time the officer explained to me what was going on. They were looking for someone that I never heard of who had stolen something and used my place as an address. I can't remember if that officer said they were a previous tenant of the apartment or not . Anyway that is the only officer I have run into that has had good communication skills and did not act like it all about us against them. It makes a difference if you treat non criminals with respect. I have had several other run in with the police outside of home one time I thought it would be all over for me when they took me in the woods. I have never committed a crime, have never been arrested for a crime. I am a black man living in America and the cops that I have run into have have been very rude and nasty to me have been white. The one good cop that iI saw was also white.

Creating a r@ce hoax is nothing new to the AA community.

When caught, as Gates has been here, suddenly the spin changes to "Well, thanks for bringing the issue up anyway or hey, it's a 1st. amendment right."

Here is one that followed the 1st, amendment spin:

OXFORD — Fingerprints and free speech make up the heart of the trial of two former Miami University students accused of posting racist and anti-gay fliers as a hoax.

Thirty-six fingerprints or palm prints of Nathaniel Snow and six prints of Brad M. Allen were found on the fliers, assistant prosecuting attorney Jeff Giuliano said Wednesday in his opening statement in Butler County Area I Court.

The two black men are responsible for perpetuating a “hate-crime hoax,” he said.

But defense attorneys said the fingerprints don't prove the two men posted the fliers. Even if they did hang the fliers, they didn't commit a crime because the First Amendment permits the posting of offensive fliers, said Kenneth Lawson, Mr. Snow's attorney.

The racist fliers sparked a Nov. 10 protest by 100 students, most of them black, who linked arms and stopped traffic at U.S. 27 and Ohio 73.

Mr. Snow, who was president of the Black Student Action Association, and Mr. Allen, who participated in the Nov. 10 protest, withdrew from Miami on Jan. 20 — when university officials confronted them with evidence against them.

BTW, Mr. Lawson has since been disbarred.

Anybody ever been stopped by a cop for something you didn't do? Had cops come to your door and demand you explain what you are doing in your home? Me neither. I am white. But I have been with friends of other races when they were stopped for something they didn't do, and let me tell you, it's scary. This was in L.A, forty years ago, and things have gotten better since. These cops, for example, didn't slam Gates' against the wall and stick a gun to his head. I bet they are good cops who were simply frustrated with Gates for not immediately cooperating, but as other writers have said, getting angry at the cops is not illegal in Cambridge. Gates got scared, and then when he wasn't immediately believed, he got angry, as innocent people often do when confronted by cops carrying guns. Maybe it is "stupid", but until you have been unfairly confronted you don't know how you would react. If Gates had done anything illegal, had he resisted arrest, punched a cop, anything at all, they would have pressed charges.

There was absolutely NO racial profiling. None. Even Mr. Gates' attorney admitted that Sergeant Crowley did nothing that indicated that he was racist; and since the police were responding to a citizen's phone call concerning a possible break-in, a charge of racial profiling against the police dept. is unfounded.

If anything, Mr. Gates is guilty of reverse-discrimination. He immediately assumed that Sergeant Crowley was racist simply based on the color of his skin. Throughout the entire investigation he bombarded the sergeant with racist labeling and verbal taunts. Mr. Gates only has himself to blame for the arrest, and only when he publicly apologizes to Sergeant Crowley will this be amicably resolved.

You could just as easily say that Crowley flipped out at a well-educated person who was a member of an elite group he could never aspire to enter and whom he therefore resented. But would that be right? Playing the "class card" ala Joe the Plumber doesn't work any more than playing any other kind of card.
11:31 AM on 07/26/2009
Listening to the Professor Skippy apologists, from now on, prior to questioning someone, the police should ask if the person being questioned is "tired" and experiencing any "jet lag" from a trip to China. If the answer to those questions is "Yes", the police should leave the premises immediately.

And, apparently, a person who is 58 years old and who is using a cane, can NEVER be arrested for disorderly conduct even if their conduct is disorderly.

Gates has gone from saying the cop has to "beg my forgiveness" to saying he won't sue. Because when it's a civil suit everything comes in, and Gates will have to confirm or deny the one thing he has yet to do. Whether he initially refused to give the ID and asked the cop "why, because I'm a black man in America?". He claims he "cooperated", but why won't he address the question of whether he accused the cop of asking him only because he was black. A statement that the second cop on the scene, who was in the house briefly, said he heard Gates say.
