BOSTON — An American Airlines flight bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico, has returned to Boston for an emergency landing about an hour after takeoff after a spokesman says the smell of smoke was discovered in a rear bathroom.

American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner says Flight 1937 returned Saturday to Boston's Logan International Airport at 9:45 a.m. Wagner says none of the 185 people on board were injured.

Maintenance workers are examining the plane and the flight has been canceled. Wagner said passengers have been rerouted to other flights.

Earlier this week, an Air France flight out of Boston heading to Paris was forced to return after a warning light flashed for one of its engines.

You don't mess around with smoke in the aircraft. You need to find a place to land NOW.

If there's a real fire you may have as little as 20 minutes to put it on the ground before the fire burns through something you need to fly the airplane.

there was another plane today in route to Glasgow from paris that filled with smoke and had to do an emergency landing at gatwick...and another plane from london to chicago on july 21st that had to land in iceland due to something burning...no end result was reported...but no one was hurt.

What is going on?

The sign of a crumbling transportation network needlessly outsourced out of it's own country.

We don't make planes anymore. And our airlines use machinery almost past due date.

Boeing will be forced to move all of it's infrastructure to China soon. The parts of it that it hasn't already.

A horrific shame, in the very country that ushered in the golden age of flight.

Well, glad AA landed safely.

O/T, but why not give Boeing a tax break or incentive sufficient enough to put Americans to work in the US?

They have their tax breaks.

Those breaks were used to ship everyone out of the country.

I remember when you used to be able to smoke on airplanes. The flight would go up, the light would go off, the tone would sound DING, and instantly, you'd hear about twenty cigarette lighters flicking. You used to have to go to the bathroom in the back of the plane and the last ten rows would all be hazy from cigarette smoke.
