Afghanistan

nytimes.com:

In three combat tours in Anbar Province, Marine Sgt. Jacob Tambunga fought the deadliest insurgents in Iraq.

But he says he never encountered an enemy as tenacious as what he saw immediately after arriving at this outpost in Helmand Province in Afghanistan. In his first days here in late June, he fought through three ambushes, each lasting as long as the most sustained fight he saw in Anbar.

Boldness is required when facing war criminals .

And if anyone is a war criminal General McChrystal who Obama has picked to head the Afghan mission qualifies. Head of Special Ops in Iraq -( yes the Torture Express) the man vowed never to allow the Red Cross to enter his Camp Nama . He acted as Cheney's right hand man for assasinations and continues to slaughter innocent civilians ( oops I mean collateral) with drones in Afghanistan.

In addition many of the soldiers now in Afghanistan are vets on their fifth and sixth deployment , operating under severe strain and PTSD . Basically they will be killing for the sheer pleasure of addiction to adrenaline, just as the Afghanis who have known nothing but war fr the last 30 years. At least the Afghanis understand why they are fighting.

So America saw what happened to another superpower in Afghanistan in the 80s and thought,
"Gee, I wanna try that!"

A 2,500 year unbeaten streak makes it hard to be humble, I guess.

30,000 more troops on their way from the President who's war vote gave him the biggest boost in the 08 campaign. 35 killed in July.

Surprise surprise!!! I was saying that prior to us sending troops. They have been fighting for the same causes in that same land for many years. That is some extremely rough terrain that our training can not properly prepare for. Our ground troops get mopped up and our air support doesn't penetrate a lot of those caves deep enough. Bring our troops home but don't just abandon the Afghan people like we did before. And stop allowing Pakistan to distract us from capturing B.Laden.

Care to try again... it is not the training that we lack but the amount of troops sent to Iraq instead of finishing the job in Afghanistan.... Who would you do? Blow up every single mountain in Afghanistan? No... it is the same as urban warfare you clear one sector at a time.. in this case we needed a lot of troops to make sure the cleared sectors remain clear... all of that went away when the 'I'm the master of the universe' Bush decided that fighting two wars would help his buddies make alot of money... then again the last part is just speculation right?

If we didn't have treasonous Republicans bashing our Commander In Chief, the enemy wouldn't be so emboldened.

Don't conservatives realize how their treason puts our soldiers in harm's way?

You can learn flank and suppress maneuvers from an Xbox game, I'm not impressed. These guys have been fighting longer than most of these soldiers, so it really shouldn't be a surprise they're good fighters.

With the multiplayer community, you can play games against anyone, from a soldier in Iraq, a kid in South Africa, even one of these people in Afghanistan. You never know. It's actually both funny and scary.

really disturbing
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/international/2009/07/26/robertson.uk.uav.drone.cnn THIS IS WHAT WE ARE USING AGAINST THEM. I am embarrassed to be American.

The main business of this country is war. And eventually the whole world will hate us.

You know it is really satisfying to not only read the paper, but put your two cents into it as well. Thanks for existing Huff post.

You know in school they teach Science and Math... progression of technology... when cavemen decided that shooting arrows is a better way to fight than hand-to-hand something in their brains clicked... welcome to the 21st century... stop living in the Stone Age...

This country did NOT make money from the wars since the Bush Admin failed at accounting.. ?? Maybe you should've said Bush administrations and their buddies made money from these two wars...

The invasion and occupation of Afghanistan is all about control of energy routes...pipelines, nothing more and nothing less. The occupation will continue as long as it takes to build and secure the energy routes, meaning forever really, even though there will be various stooge "democratic" governments along the way.

The map at the link below gives a fairly good idea of what is at stake, with Russia, Iran and China on the one side and the "West" - US and Europe - on the other.

JoeBlough -- And start fully exploring and exploiting (as the "oilies" say) ... GETTING OUR ENERGY FROM THE SUN. I think it's already there, except for the "development" and "distribution".

Peace, a dividend.

Maybe the b omb makers can retool themselves to create solar and other alternative energies.

Iraq had lived under Saddam for 25 years. They had no practice on insurgency. Afghanistan has been fighting against invading armies for those same 25 years so they have a long history of insurgency. There is little wonder then that the Afghan fighters are tougher than Iraqi fighters. Anything else would have been a huge surprise.
