Fave local place? The Duck Club in Bodega Bay for breakfast. They make a perfect eggs Benedict.
The also serve an abundant bowl of fresh fruit for those who are vegan.

Why didn't my suggestion make it on the list? The Inn at Ship Bay, Eastsound, WA. This place is amazing - and they either grow their own produce or use local organic goods. Also, a personal favorite is Genoa, in Portland, OR.

I don't know how NY did not get #1 (except for the fact that people love underdogs). NY most certainly has the best food in the world. Perhaps people don't know this because they don't leave Times Square when they visit.

Wile I agree that there are some GREAT restaurants in NYC, I think you are missing out by not seeing some of the things we have to offer in Cleveland, Ohio! Lola, Lolita, Greenhouse Tavern, Blue Canyon, Crop Bistro, so many fantastic options in every style and price range, and we have a much smaller population than NYC, so that means more great chefs per capita!

I think the point of the article, which half the people here seem to be missing (at least in part because HuffPo has presented it in a knuckle-headed way that is unfortunately typical of the "Green" section of the website) is SUPPOSED to be: "what restaurants serve great food that is grown/produced nearby?", not just "what restaurants have tasty food that represents some regional or local cuisine?" It's not great local food, in the "locavore" sense, if your Philly cheesesteak is made with beef from Nebraska or your gumbo is made with shrimp from Mexico.

This could explain why NYC would not be #1 - yeah, a great variety of tasty food, much of which is made from ingredients brought in from hundreds if not thousands of miles away. But if you're serving Long Island oysters and asparagus from New Jersey, well, OK then. That's more like it.

No, NYC has some fine places but not the best food. In the US, that would be San Francisco/Napa/Berkeley area....Los Angeles has the best Asian cuisine. For steaks, any place in Montana, and for ethnic foods, Butte, Montana, old Europe at its best....

Jerry's Drive-In, Pensacola, FL. Fried Mullet, mmmmmm. And perfect bacon cheesburgers. Been there since 1938 or so, and you're likely to see the mayor downing a meatloaf sandwich [Thursdays only].

Feast Gourmet Market in Deep River, CT. The best damn sandwiches I've ever had. A premium is put on local ingredients...and just down the road...River Tavern in Chester, CT. Sublime, diverse food. The place is always packed. Together, they team up and put on Farm to Table dinners on site at their supplier farms throughout CT all summer.

Inn at Ship Bay, Eastsound, WA. Wonderful small restaurant on Orcas Island that uses local organic produce and meats, grows a lot of their own, and has the most wonderful chef to pull it all together. Yum!

R. Thomas on Peachtree St in Atlanta is excellent. And green too. They cater to everyone from vegan to meat eaters.

Does anyone else feel that restaurants are inherently NOT particularly green?

I am glad we're talking about food restaurants and not, say, paint restaurants.

Betty's Restaurant and Barbecue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
601 NW 22nd Rd

Not a weak item on the menu. If you have room the homemade cakes are just as good as the rest of the entrees and sides. My favorite is the oversized fluffy square of cornbread. that comes with every meal.

Two Sisters (was Two Sisters Kitchen) not to be confused with the Court of Two Sisters Restaurant
223 N. Derbigny Street
New Orleans, LA

Very, very tasty food served in generous portions and a kind and friendly staff. They will not break your pocketbook either. Two Sisters is the favorite haunt of politicians, locals and the lucky tourists who get the inside tip to hop a cab and get a seat there. Well worth the trip.

The Cove in San Antonio is quite the good restaurant. They only use grass fed beef, free-range chicken and sustainable fish hatcheries.

Another good local food place that just opened near downtown is the Farm to Table restaurant. It is supported by the new Farmer's Market at the ol' Pearly Brewery.

Napoli's Italian Eatery, 2nd and Market Streets, downtown Canton, Ohio. I am very partial to their Chef's Salad but you can't lose with any of the menu. If you're into Italian food this is a can't miss spot even if you're just passing through.
