Too many conservative senators like Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) are to blame for the GOP's downfall, one of their retiring Republican colleagues complained Monday.
"We got too many Jim DeMints and Tom Coburns," Voinovich told the Columbus Dispatch. "It's the southerners."

Texas is the only state I've visited (out of many) in recent years where you still see those ridiculous cast iron black jockey statues in people's yards. As Molly Ivins used to say, it's the land of tacky. Things may be changing in the south, but they're changing slowly. Old times there are not forgotten..
Too bad Voinovich waited until retirement to call out his fellow scoundrels. Still, I just love it when they eat their own.
It's not just the racism in the Republican Party. It's also the almighty dollar. In fact, the almighty dollar might be just a tad higher on the list then racism.

This was by the way, 2005 (when New Mexico was still "red.") And there haven't been any other studies released since then.
In addition, notice which states comprised of the top 20? 9 of the top 15 were from the SOUTH! But of the top 15, 13 of those states were RED! Of the top 32 (those who paid in more than they got back from the federal government,) 27 of those were RED!
Now on the other end (33-50,) how many of them were BLUE? 15 of 17! These "red state" representatives and people from the South who think they have something to b*tch about in regards to paying federal income taxes, I have something to say, GO F YOURSELVES!!!!!

It is the South that is the problem. Look what happened when Lyndon Johnson pushed through the civil rights legislation. Dixiecrats switched to the Republican party in droves. It has always been all about racisim. Fortunately the pond is draining as more and more of these old geezers pass on.
To get into Congress you have to be elected.
The issue is more than a few old intemperate geezers.

It's not just the Southerners Mr Voinavich, it's the whole damn party. when your political party caters to one race, and you have people affiliated with your party running around telling anyone who'll listen that the President of the United States is "undocumented" you put yourself and your beliefs in the middle of a family's tradgedy (Terri Schiavo). You are forgetting Michelle Bachmann from Minnesota. Last time I looked, Minnesota wasn't exactly south of Michigan. In fact, part of it is north of that state although her district isn't.
I'm a transplanted Northerner. I love the South ! A much more tolerant Racial Environment than Chicago to which I will never return to love.
Not all southerners fit this mold. I am from the South, and the people I hang out with are nothing like the people talked about in this post/article. Most are laid back with that good old Southern hospitality. When you go to someone's house, the first thing they ask is if you want something to eat, and make you feel very comfortable while you are there. Remember Hurricane Katrina? Those people are not the people illustrated as the Southern Christian Right (or whatever they are called.) Those people (Republicans) give the Christ and the South a bad reputation.
What then explains the consistent electoral results in the South?
We like free markets, which bring jobs.
I don't care much about social issues, but i don't like that the Chicago machine is trying to impose the policies that ruined CA and MI on the functioning parts of the country.
Are you a white person going to other white people's houses when you make that claim? Try being a person of color and see how far that gets you? I was in the neighboring neighborhood where W moved to. Actually I was just on the edge. No sooner did I know that I was in Highland Park I was pulled over. I was at a stop light making a turn a block away from the tollway to get the heck out of neighborhood. The cop did all he could to hold back a "what're you doing around here boy!" Not speeding. Not driving recklessley. No loud music. Oh yeah, that's right. I did have a white girl in the passenger's seat. Maybe that was it.
I've lived in teh South for 35 years and I never experienced what you described. Most of them are rude racist pigs.
We are transplanted northerners living in SC. The neighborhood we live in is upscale and racially mixed. It is also mixed between transplants and natives. We have found that the transplants (who are white) are for the most part liberal and not prejudiced. On the other hand the neighbors on either side of us are natives. The young couple next door have bought land and are planning to leave because the neighborhood is too "dark". Their words, not mine. The other neighbors are retired, he from the public school system. He is constantly telling me off color and racist jokes. Mind you, he always prefaces them with an apology.
After being here for four years, I can attest that racial bigotry is alive and well in the "deep south".
I might add that only two of us , both white northern transplants (out of 43 homes) had the guts to post Obama signs last year.

Dick Lugar. If he were any further north, he'd be in Canada. lol I know what you mean, and you're right, but I just wouldn't have used the Senate as an example. I would have used the northeast in either the Senate or the House. It's not that they don't exist, but the numbers are literally small enough to count on one hand.

Oh, and not to forget Judd Gregg, Collins and Snowe. I should include Spector but technically, he says he's a Dem.
