CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bank of America Corp. could eventually shrink its 6,100-branch network by about 10 percent as consumers utilize other methods of banking, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

Bank of America spokesman James Mahoney made the comments when asked about a published report that CEO Ken Lewis and another bank executive described such a plan to investors at a meeting last week in Charlotte, N.C., where the bank is based.

The move would be a pullback from the bank's two-decade expansion, most recently under Lewis' command, which expanded the bank from coast to coast.

"What took place was a discussion about the long-term direction of the company," Mahoney said. "Over the longer-term, as customer demands evolve, we see a fewer number of branches that provide more services."

The bank does not have a specific number of branches that will ultimately compose its franchise, Mahoney said, adding there's no immediate plan to close 10 percent of the bank's branches.

"In response to a question from an investor on the magnitude of branch closings, Lewis did acknowledge that the range could be potentially 10 percent," Mahoney said.

Shares of Bank of America rose 25 cents, or 1.9 percent, to close at $13.34 Tuesday.

Liam McGee, president of Bank of America's consumer and small-business bank, was also part of the meeting, Mahoney confirmed. The Wall Street Journal said in Tuesday's edition that McGee cited changing customer preferences for the move and noted more people are using online and mobile banking.

However, Richard Bove of Rochdale Research said the reason for the closures is both economic and regulatory.

"While the bank is likely to close the branches, the reason being given is simply farcical," Bove wrote in a research note Tuesday. "The branches will be closed because they are not economically viable."

The news comes as Bank of America continues to be under the careful watch of the U.S. government, while it works to integrate two recent deals.

Bank of America acquired troubled mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp. last summer and investment bank Merrill Lynch & Co. in January.

Those two acquisitions have proven challenging for Lewis, who was stripped of his chairman title by a shareholder vote at his company's annual meeting in April.

The bank and Lewis have been under intense scrutiny because Bank of America is one of the biggest recipients of government bailout money – $45 billion – and because the losses at Merrill Lynch turned out to be much higher than expected. It is not known when it will repay the government.

Last week, Bank of America announced a big second-quarter profit, but tempered the news by reporting it is still contending with losses from failed loans. During a call with analysts, Lewis said it would be "much tougher" to turn a profit for the rest of the year.

"Closing branches actually makes a lot of sense from a standpoint of trying to cut costs and have profitability," said Jason O'Donnell, a senior research analyst at Boenning & Scattergood Inc.

And because of the bank's numerous acquisitions over the years, "BofA does have the luxury of looking back and getting rid of overlap and overhead," O'Donnell said.

Bank of America has become a financial powerhouse befitting its name.

First under chief executive Hugh McColl Jr., and since 2001 under Lewis, the bank has grown through acquisition from a little North Carolina National Bank into a behemoth that holds more assets and deposits than any U.S. bank.

In 2004, the bank acquired FleetBoston Financial, a move that gave Bank of America $133 billion in deposits in eight Northeastern states. Three years ago it added millions of names to its customer ledger through the purchase of credit card issuer MBNA Corp.

In 2007, the bank completed its purchase of wealth management company U.S. Trust and acquired LaSalle Bank Corp., immediately turning Lewis' bank into the market leader in Chicago.

The acquisition of California-based Countrywide last year brought Bank of America to the forefront of the mortgage business, and the Merrill Lynch deal bought the bank a large presence back on Wall Street.

This trend towards Internet Banking is just one more way for Bank of America to lay-off people and cut back on services. Those who "love" Internet Banking are idiots. Even with all the anti-virus programs there is always the possibility that a hacker could get into your account.
In addition, there are those little problems that can best be solved by a living, breathing human-being. I am fortunate to have my accounts in 2 credit unions. They know me and give excellent service. On once occasion (only one) I was overdrawn on my checking account. The credit union took the money from my savings account to pay the check in my checking account. They do charge a fee, but, it is much lower than the banks. When I realized my mistake and called the credit union, they removed the fee because they knew that I had a history of not being overdrawn. Doubt that your Internet banker would be that accomodating.

I have done business with banks and credit unions and by far prefer the credit unions. During this recession, my credit union has provided excellent service and didn't suddenly tack on additional bogus fees.

When my local bank was taken over by the Bank of America I started to get huge fees for my small account so I went elsewhere. I went to UBS (Citizen's) and have now left them. From now on I will only deal with my local bank that is government insured. They know who I am and I know them. I will never do business with a "too large to fail" bank again. I hope they all have to pull back until they are able to fail on their own merits.

Everyone seems to be focused on government, but the real culprits to our economic morass and destruction lies at the feet of private wealth and power. The government's role is to act as the distraction as well as the punching bag for immoral behavior and greed exhibited by our so called capitalists. In otherwords, the government is their scapegoat for all our problems with private power and government knowing full well that the public is impotent to do anything against it.

Our elected representatives were employed by the American people to act in the best interest of the American people, and not the interests of lobbyists and their corporate clients, or for that matter their own self-interests. The solution to the money/influence problem that is plaguing government from doing the moral thing is simply this: ban all sorts of compensations to elected officials; that is, make it a federal crime, punishable of up to 20 years in state prison, to receive any lobbying dollars from special interests. Our government can create a tax subsidized fund to pay for candidates who wish to run for office. We can also raise the salaries of these representatives to hopefully inhibit the urge to take what amounts to, presently, as legalized bribes.

You are absolutely correct novoorganum. The big problem is 'we the people' The complacency of the voter has allowed corruption to manifest. If the voter would get tough and demand change in lobbyist laws, things could change, but not until then.

We are well past the time that elected officials represent "we the people". They represent the corporations and other wealthy interests and just are no longer afraid to let "we the people" know it. You have an interesting idea about receiving lobbying dollars a federal crime, but since Congress as the Legislative branch writes the laws, do you think that bill would get passed?

It is typical for large corporations when doing mergers and acquisitions to "downsize" and lay off staff. This often results in profits for the company while employees have to double down the work. The Board of Directors and shareholders are happy so they reward the CEO with a bonus. Guess who loses?

I'll be happy when 100% of their branches are closed and they are left in bankruptcy like millions of their customers.

Good ridd@ance, BofA. ;P

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite their denials, influential Democratic Sens. Kent Conrad and Chris Dodd were told from the start they were getting VIP mortgage discounts from one of the nation's largest lenders, the official who handled their loans has told Congress in secret testimony.

Oh, but what will the faithful tellers and branch managers do?

Well, they will roll over and play nice, while the CEO's have a nice vacation in Europe and send thier children to the best schools.

Get it?

Didn't think so.

They could start by removing those swas*tika bank logos.

The more profit they make the more branches they will close and the more jobs they will dump or outsource.

Congress will NEVER put the proper restrictions on these thieves.

What else is new. It's the Amerikan model of business.

More branch closing means more unemployment and lousier service. After recieving a huge bail out to the tune of Billions, one would think BOFA would do the moral and selfless thing and keep its employees on the payroll. Rather than making it a government problem by adding more people to the rolls of poverty and forcing it to spend on social programs. Here is a suggestion: How about cutting 10% of its CEO's salaries and bonuses. I'm pretty sure that will make up for the shortfall.

Unfortunately, greed will trump morality, especially when there are no limits placed on the greedy.
And in the "Capitalism is always right" and "Socialism is always bad" mentality that has been pounded into us, truly moral and selfless people are seen as "losers."

Watch this trend develop among all the large financial institutions. They would prefer that you bank online. I wouldn't be surprised if Bank of America, the king of service charges, may charge you in the future to speak face to face with one of its employees. They have the worst customer service.
Customers have always had a weird relationship with banks. An economics professor of mine pointed out that upon entering a bank their actions mimic entering a church. It's true.

i love online bill pay, online eft transactions. no need to go to the bank most of the time. if you need cash, just use your ATM for cashback at any grocery store while you are already there.

too many branches, too much overhead, too much costs...

No quality customer service. The point is that they are making it more difficult for those who choose not to conduct banking business on the internet. Branch closings disproportionally affects the poor and the elderly the most as they are less likely to have access to or utilize a personal computer. Their limited incomes also make travel to another location an added expense.

Since BofA has three branches on every corner, you won't notice a thing.
