This is a silly "story".

As a conservative spender I can list many reasons for not blowing every cent earned and the reasons don't stem from a lack of generosity. People that save understand the value of money and are liable to create security for themselves and their family . It's not about one person being a "tightwad Scrooge" an another being a free-spirited generous spender. Over spending and over-consumption is the bedrock of our economy and we are watching it crumble quickly.

Truth is that there is a richness to living simply- and there is precious little materially speaking that one "must have". When I was renovating my home an ex-bf ,a Spender, one day offered to run up his Credit Card to help me get all the stuff I needed for my home renovation.....and then just walk away from the debt. His logic: his credit was shot anyway and he'd thought we would get married and that would be that. Alarming. Well my answer was "no" and that was that.

And that is one reason divorce is like 60% now.

The article does not indicate the ages of these opposites who attract. I can understand this trend among young people: she's hot, he wants to impress/keep her. Plus young people tend to be more flexible in their ways.

But I'd have a hard time believing this in, say, the over 55 crowd where the financial clock is ticking.

Never marry anyone without checking their credit report first.

I agree its a big step and you CAN do it after your are engaged but you should do it plenty ahead of your marriage.

Marriage is not (and shouldnt) be only about love. Marriage is like a business. Just like you shouldnt go into business with a partner you dont know everything about, you shouldnt marry just about anyone just because you love them.

Well, neither the headline on HuffPo nor the one on Yahoo! live up to what the story really said.

What the study found was that people who don't like the fact that they are big spenders tend to marry people who don't like the fact that they are tightwads.

It does not say anything about big spenders who are happy being big spenders nor tightwads who are happy being tightwads.

Both my wife and I fall into the category of tightwads who are happy with the way we are. There have been very few disagreements over money in our 40 years of married life.

Obvious!
A person who likes to spend will be more attracted to a person that saves their wealth.
They are called gold diggers!
And they are everywhere, acting as a Lolipop.........looking for a Sucker around every corner! LOL

One of the biggest reasons for divorce, from what I've seen out of people I've known.

I'd bet it's mostly the big spender going after the "saver", rather than the other way around.

And this is the so-called sanctity that so many are trying to save? I wonder if they did a similar survey of how many spendthrifts they slept with before "settling" with someone who could maintain their lifestyle.

Really? I was under the wrong impression that gold diggers were marrying homeless people.

FOIST!
That makes sense in a cynical kind of way.
Makes it easier for the big spender to spend more, especially if it's the big savers money.
