(AP) -- The Democrat hoping to challenge Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the general election has gained some ground against the billionaire Republican-turned-independent.

A new Quinnipiac University poll shows City Comptroller William Thompson trails Bloomberg 47 to 37 percent. That compares with Bloomberg's 54 to 32 percent lead last month.

Quinnipiac notes another change. In June, pollsters described Thompson as the Democrat and Bloomberg as the independent.

In Tuesday's poll, Bloomberg was identified as a candidate who was running as both a Republican and an independent.

The mayor is not running as a Republican but has secured the GOP ballot line.

The poll surveyed 1,290 registered city voters from July 21 to July 27. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

New Yorkers have to know Bloomberg has never been working for the hardworking New Yorkers. He's been working for his billionaire friends like himself. He's lowered corporate and property tax on big corporations. He believes CEOs of pharmaceuticals don't make much money. Is this someone who's in touch with the average New Yorkers.

I don't trust Bloomberg any longer, especially after
railroading the vote for a third term.

Thompson seems like a decent man,

given the difference in money anything less than a 90 to 10 percent victory for bloomberg should translate into a defeat. it's hard to turn on the TV without some bogus laden ad for moneybags bloomberg trying to buy the election. he loves to act like he's turned the schools around, but the truth is that the schools are a disaster. there may be a few anecdotal successes, but this is always the case. the general situation is in its usual dysfunctional state, administration heavy, classroom overload and insufficient, outdated classroom materials. he's done a great job at disconnecting manhattan from the rest of the city.

Here's a idea: Let's have Citi search and hire for the next mayor of NYC. They' re paying big bucks for the "Best Talent"
In light of this poll, do you really believe Thompson is an astute, Dem to control this city?

Cuomo's aren't too shabby and seem to know what party they are with at all times. Plenty of smart democrat politicians have hit the scene in New York. Bloomberg; a wizard of oz - for the good that he seems to do, he does harm thrice behind the scenes.

New York can do better than Bloomberg and Giuliani.

wow..even a completely on topic post concerning the mayoral race gets 'moderated'....maybe we should insert the adjective's meaning of the word 'moderate' into the moderation of these comments. This is factual information, nothing hateful or misplaced, what gives?

Maybe a new Mayoral administration of NYC will allow the new investigation of the events of September 11th, 2001 to go ahead. The current administration of Mayor Bloomberg, and his City Clerks office, denied the attempt by 70,000 New Yorkers to get a question on the upcoming ballot to open a truly independent and scientifically valid investigation into the hundreds of questions still remaining about that day and the years since. We will not go away until the truth of 9/11 is revealed.

Agreed. Sadly it appears the way politics works these days is only the excessively wealthy or excessively bought can afford to run for office so we continue to get more of the same.
My comment may or may not appear as most of my posts get "pre-moderated" out of existence for unfathomable reasons (?).
