The Minnesota Independent:

Al Franken spewed fire and Amy Klobuchar threw brimstone this morning at the Senate Judiciary Committee's vote on Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Minnesotans joined 10 other Democrats and one Republican in approving the nominee, but not before Franken raked the current Court and Klobuchar decried bias against women on the bench.

It's scary, though. Are there no corporations in MN who will work to defeat him? They would consider him a threat to the rest of the country who are in their pockets.

Ironic-

Cries juducial activism, then votes in support of someone who publicly laughs about making practice of it. What fools we are electing.

Will all of the wise and insightful commentators who dismissed Franken as a mindless clown who would never produce more than shallow one-liners and embarrassing gaffes, and who wish to apologize while there is still a chance of salvaging their reputations, please take a number and stand quietly in line until called. Thank you.

No. Pls listen to what he alleges and then procedes to not prove his case....the examples he cites has nothing to do with "idividual rights" save the voiting rights act line and he admits that it was "close to being overturned" as opposed to actually overturned. So once again

Send in the clowns

Telemachus

I'll second that. Franken is a well-educated man that has been tuned in to US politics and government for years. He'll do much for Minnesota and all Americans.

Is it ok if some of us forego having a clown elected by counties where the ballots cast exceded the registered voters "do much for us"?

Al kicked ass.

The Republicans don't have a single elected official as articulate, thoughtful or talented. Al is picking up the mantle of the late Sen. Wellstone as the liberal voice of conscience in the Senate.

Every conservative out there wants Roe V Wade OVERTURNED. THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF JUDICIAL ACTIVISM.

And they argue that abortion is not in the constitution and hence this is constructionist and Roe V Wade was the activism....they are only reversing activism

The right to privacy is in the bill of rights. That means women have a right to be private in the decisions about their own lives. No religious nut has the right to dictate their unscientific, religious beliefs on anyone else. Roe v. Wade is clearly in accordance with the tenets of our constitution.

I am going to assume you are a conservative, and I am going to let you know off the bat that I am a believer in the principles of convertatism laid down by Barry Goldwater. i am not gong to resort to name calling, what I am going to do is lay out an argument against upholding roe v. wade. Now, posit this, before abortion was legal, did women still have abortions? Yes, women who were either irresponsible and didn't want a child or were unable to care for the child got back alley abortions. So would overturning roe v. wade stop abortions? No. Now, as someone from the christian faith and with some conservative leanings, is abortion a sin? Yes, according to the bible abortion is a sin. Is cheating on your wife a sin? Yes. Do we criminalize cheating on our spouses? No. Is forcing someone not to sin because of biblical law in a country with seperation of church and state akin to involving government in our lives? Yes. So just as Barry Goldwater and other conservatives have turned away from reversing roe v. wade, I believe we should accept, deal with it and get on with our lives. It's the law of the land, deal with.

So lots look at what he actually allege:
1. The current court limits individual liberties. As proof he cites:
a. Limited abortions (not sure how but he alleges it)....
b. the court came close (did not do it, but came close) to overturning a voting rights law passed by congress
c. Shifted burden of proof in "price fixing" to the party alleging price fixing
d. Denied older people being defined as a designated "victim" group
e. Allowed corporations the same rights as unions in elections.

So where is the limit on "individual liberties?

Send in the clowns

The "judicial activism" meme has been ripped out of the grasp of the GOP by our newest Senator. Let's not give it back. Ever. To a repug, judicial activism is any court decision he/she disagrees with.

Thank you for those comments ~ you are 100% right, the current court is an activist court and the example you cited show them for what they are!! Keep it up.
