A single truck or cab driver operating on a small business license is not a small business but an exploited human being. The whole scheme should be forbidden by law. If you want to hire someone, hire them and pay them at your own expense when there is no work.

I'm of the opinion that a goodly percentage of small businesses are like surfers - they ride along the crest of the wave when prosperity reigns, but quickly fall off into the trough when the wave resides. And that's because a lot of them are retail businesses that sell things that few people really need or are just one more in a full field of competitors.

Here are some of the small businesses that don't surprise me when they fail:

Specialty popcorn store
Striptease dancer apparel
The third Bridal Shop across the street from the mall
The fourth fast food restaurant in the block
The fifth Coffee Shop in the neighborhood
Fitness equipment store

Not everyone is going to succeed.

Remember the running Saturday Night Live skits about the "Scotch Tape Store" at the mail? I notice a lot of scotch tape stores going out of business, too.

As usual selective amnesia is rampant among conservatives. The Party of personal responsibility can never find the courage to practice what it preaches. That’s why so many of their war supporters were draft dodgers. No guts.

I'll have to agree with you, olephart. We were traveling down this road for awhile.

I'd be more inclined to blame Republicans than real conservatives. Real conservatives wouldn't have bailed out the big guys at the expense of the little ones.

Personally, I think this is all part of a "plan" to shake out the small businesses so big corporations will have less competition. They want it all for themselves. Even with big lenders getting bailed out, I doubt they care to lend money to small businesses, as the risk is larger since those won't get any government bailouts.
