I saw this on CNN, the cakes looked great, a little expensive for me, but I'm happy for her, and hope she has continued success.
That's a real feel good story. All about working hard, being positive and helping others. Nothing to complain about here right?!!
I want a cake. It looks good.
Wow, I am of two minds on this
1) It's great that this lady was able to sell something and find people to buy it and saver herself financially. More power to her. HOWEVER-
2) I don't like the implication that somehow others who CAN'T do this are at fault- this kind of one in a million 'feel good' story is just that- one in a million. There are millions of other people who are not in any way going to be able to save themselves, their homes or their families by baking cakes, etc. and I feel like it is sort of unrealistic to paint a rosy picture that somehow they can.
Also, I agree with a poster below- I am very surprised she was able to do this. You have to meet rigorous health safety standards to prepare food for the public in a home kitchen. So once she becomes famous, the Health Department may be shutting her down anyway. Sad, but very likely
It isn't that people are "at fault". It's just that people can choose to give up or they can choose to fight...sometimes the fight doesn't make it better or make it turn your way but it's better than caving.
I guess my question wuld be "why" can't they save themselves? I know realisticlly you are correct that this is maybe a one in a million shot but you know what, if you don't TRY, you will never know what you can or can't do. The real question whould be "what do you have to lose by trying? It can't make matters any worse then they already are. AND you just never know what might happen. Good for her.

Interesting.
It tends to paint with a broad brush all the benefits of striving for a positive outlook. The problem with what he terms "magical thinking" is its lack of sincerity and an inability to meet the moment "as is". "As is" often means we are grieving, we are in pain, we are alone, etc...but it doesn't mean wallow and stay there or give up.
Therein lies the trick- to hold the suffering while holding the joy. Our realities are always subjective but life is ostensibly a mix of good and bad so when one can cosy up to that then there is no need for magical thinking or for being "dark".

Isn't God's creative and imaginative power awesome? He can help you do anything. I am just totally blessed by this story that smacks of the biblical story of the woman who marketed her oil to raise money to keep her sons out of debtors prison. If He did it before, He can do it again and again for all of us.
Sell crazy somewhere else
Idiotik statements saying, "We don't need a stimulus, 90 percent of Americans are bringing themselves out of debt by baking.." come from Michael Steele, Limbaugh and the GOP in 5...4...3.
