Doctors Create New Nose For Woman By Growing It On Her Arm (VIDEO)

Fox News has an uplifting report about how doctors were able to create a new nose for a woman from Guyana by first growing it on her arm. The young woman was involved in a drive-by shooting in her native country, and through the help of some benevolent doctors and the "Face to Face" program she was able to come to the U.S. for this operation. The surgery was a success and will go a long way towards returning normalcy to her life.

In college they teach you that this fulfills the formula news requirement of "medical oddity" news. There was nothing "uplifting" about Fox including it. They were following a formula proven to attract viewers. Exploitation is more appropriate term. Sorry for the cynicism folks but education will do that to you.

I was eating breakfast while watching the video. All I saw was a lovely young girl who was about to receive a marvelous gift from kind and generous people.

But what do I know, I cry over phone commercials.

I agree with some of the other commentators here who mentioned how this sort of treatment is not available to American poor. Despite the misdirection of some of the posters here, this is not about resentment for the woman who was able to undergo a presumably expensive treatment pro-bono.

It is about the fact that Americans love to pat themselves on the back for their charitability, but we have also created a world (and a country) in which charity is necessary. Forget Americans who do not receive care like this as a rule, what about the many Guyanese who probably will never see themselves transported to America for their medical problems

The reason that this story is news is that it is exceptional and rare that ANYONE should receive care like this - absent the money to pay for it. I like a feel good story as much as anyone, but I'd prefer that this was so common-place that it was no longer news.

The truth about cases like this is that while there is almost certainly a "for the good of mankind" motivation, being able to perform an exciting surgery with an opportunity for self promotion was probably a big motivating factor as well.
