I've lived in the Phoenix area for 29 years. My sensible mother from Colorado explained to me that you cannot keep a house cool unless you prevent the sun from warming the glass. It's exactly the same process that causes cars here to become 140 degrees inside when it's 118 outside. The very best #1 way to beat the heat is using heavy duty sun screens that block 75% of solar rays. I don't know why so many people use black screen because it's seems to retain heat and makes me dizzy to look through. Ours is a soft blue-gray that's very easy on the eyes. We bought the screening commonly used for overhead protection all around our new home rather than the finer weave. We've used actual air conditioning less than two weeks total so far this summer. We do have an evap cooler that works wonders over the air conditioning system because of the added airflow through moisture during dry conditions. I have lupus; these things keep me alive and more able to be active.
