It's a challenge to keep being surprised by what Glenn Beck says, but this video is truly amazing. Beck declares that funds to protect turtles and otters would only be worthy if they carried guns to protect The United States, and proceeds to start screaming about whether there's a powerful turtle and otter lobby.

Maintaining a balanced ecosystem is in the economic interest of a nation. The problem is that Republican economics are always based on the short term, what is in our financial interest NOW. They'd rather save a small amount of money in the short term than not pay an ENORMOUS amount amount of money later on when the situation goes from managable to critical. I.E. rebuilding New Orleans' leavies, environmental policy, etc.

When alligators nearly became extinct, it devastated the everglades and much of Florida. A species dwindling can have a domino effect, resulting either in population collapses or population explosions of other animals, which then leads in further collapses and explosions, and so on and so forth.

At some point a person becomes such a nuisance, such a blemish on the society he lives in, that it is just not funny anymore. Glenn Beck has joined this rarefied status. He is playing out the psychological archetype of the clown child with the apparent blessing of the RNC. I suppose this is the final leg in the Southern strategy.

Anybody remember when John McCain had to correct the elderly woman's contention that Barack Obama was an "Arab"? Glenn Beck is working every day to make that kind of high humor commonplace at Republican events. Recently we had Rep. Mike Castle's constituents screaming at him that Barack Obama was born in Mombasa.

There are still serious people on the Republican side. I find it remarkable that they are able to maintain a straight face through all this, and are not running in panic.

Come on guys, there is a price to pay for this kind of nonsense, and a hangover to suffer through.
