Their new search service is rumored to be called Hoo-IE. I predict: Epic Fail. Microsoft can't even get it's boat anchor of a browser to work better or faster on it's own operating system. When your competitor literally becomes the generic name for an internet search, I think you should spend your money some place else.

microsoft can't fathom the necessary technologies and business model in order to seriously compete with google.
ads revenue is gravy. where does the rest of the revenue come from?
Can anything dethrone Google from it's level of popularity and stop all those that have it engrained in them to use it dozens of times or more every day out of habit?
People don't say 'do a web search' or 'check a search engine' anymore. They say 'google it'.

Don't count on this deal going through. Microsoft has pulled the rug out from under Yahoo before.
Given that it is perceived by the market as being a bad deal for Yahoo, there is much more risk that they will baulk.
Same old Microsoft, if you can't compete with your technology, use your stock to keep buying up the competition and build your own monopoly by eventually pricing the competition out of business. After the competition is gone, then jack up the prices for your mediocre systems.
This is the same old business model that John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil used in the previous Gilded Age.
