Unfortunate Headline Of The Day (PIC)

Reporter Rita Hooker of DeKalb, Texas received a lovely honor last week from the Kiwanis Club. She was named the 2009 Lay Person of the Year, meaning she does outstanding work in the community and is not a member of the clergy. We wish Rita many wonderful returns of the day and a more fortunate headline the next time around...

Sometimes stuff goes right past them - as it does for all of us.

Back in the 1980s, the Green Bay (WI) Press-Gazette had a headline about the huge number of bills passed by the state assembly that then-governor Tommy Thompson was slashing with his line item veto. The Headline: "Thompson's Pen is a Sword".

Which looked swell on the computer screens, and was missing by all of the software right through compositing, where the proportional typeface for the headlines dramatically reduced the space between the words "pen" and "is." The editor said he darn near drove off the road when he saw the headline in the streetcorner vending machines and realized how it looked from a distance.

Absolutely hilarious!! However, bet Rita Hooker doesn't appreciate the humor. Some copy editor has a great sense of humor (and irony) in a poor little straight-laced East Texas town that surely could use a good laugh. Wonderful! I grew up next door to DeKalb (in Texarkana), and knew the town as largely a wide place in the road. Now it will have its 15 minutes of fame...Enjoy!
