Ben Nelson On Ads Run Against Him: They Could Kill Health Care Reform

Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) lashed out Friday at the ads being run against his position on health care reform in his home state, saying they would backfire -- and might even derail the entire reform process.

In a statement issued late in the afternoon by Nelson's office, spokesman Jake Thompson warned that if the new series of ads calling out the Senator's "stalling" on reform were "an indication of the politics going into August, then health care reform may be dead by the end of August."

"Nebraskans don't need outside special interest groups telling them what to think. Senator Nelson has nothing but praise for Nebraska groups working toward health care reform. Unfortunately, he says, these outside groups undermine the sincere and dedicated efforts of people in our state," Thompson wrote. "Recently, similar ads have run in Nebraska. Those ads by other special interests prompted hundreds of Nebraskans to call our offices, with 9 to 1 urging Senator Nelson to do exactly the opposite of what the special interest group wanted. In short, the ads backfired."

The hard brush-back by Nelson's staff reflects just how heated the health care debate has become even within the Democratic Party. On Friday morning, two liberal groups, Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) and Democracy for America, launched a new ad using the testimony of a Nebraska businessman to call out Nelson for holding up health care legislation in the Senate. The spot was one in a series of television spots the groups have launched targeting the senator.

Asked if Thompson's warning would dissuade his organization from running the ad -- which is slated to air 200 times in Nebraska by next Wednesday -- Adam Green, co-founder of PCCC, responded: "Absolutely not. We're going to buy more ads in Nebraska on Monday."

"Ben Nelson just called a Nebraska small businessman whose health insurance costs went up 42% an out-of-state special interest, while never disputing that he is bought and paid for by health and insurance interests who gave him millions to vote against his own constituents," Green continued. "If Ben Nelson stands behinds his spokesman's words, he just proved himself a fundamentally corrupt and out-of-touch politician who feels perfectly comfortable lying to his constituents and going to bat for private insurers who fear competition and want to rip off the people of Nebraska."

As a independent democrat who is from Omaha I appreciate Senator Nelsons common sense approach to the Health Care proposal. It is key to getting this bill correct and if it takes time to do so if necessary so be it! This bill in it's current state is dead in the water by sept. and I have urged Sen. Nelson to vote against it in it's current form.....The financing and abstract math by the Obama Admin. just doesn't add up! It is no wonder why our state has the 2nd lowest unemployment rate in the nation and is fiscally sound compared to tax and spend states like California, New York, and Michigan....Lighten up people...Reform not revolutionalize the whole system!

F Nelson - corrupt SOB - sad commentary when a US Senator is blatantly sold IN PUBLIC to the highest corporate bidder .....and there is NOTHING that can be done immediately. So are we supposed to wait until he is up for RE-SALE in 2010 or 2012 ..? Mean while he can just sell out his constituents...???

I want to vomit.

I live in a very conservative Southern California district but have been trying to get support for healthcare reform. I constantly hear fear expressed with the line “government will get between you and your doctor”. Liberals instead of trying to defend this, need to take a page from the Frank Luntz playbook and inform the public that Wall Street already is there. Health insurers set premiums, deny service and rescind coverage to meet Wall Street expectations. Big Pharma sets drug prices to do the same. We saw last year how much we can trust Wall Street and recent fat executive bonuses demonstrated their gratitude. We need to make them the bad guys rather than defend government.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Too often, the Republicans get away with framing the issues and the Democrats react to the Republican framing placing them in a defensive position. The corporate mainstream media falls in line promoting the Republican framing every time.

I might be completely naive but aren't our elected officials supposed to be in office to make this country a better place for everyone and not just themselves?

Sounds to me like the ads might be effective. His Democratic constituents need to know about his turncoat ways.

I don't think Nebraskans are as dumb as Mr. Ben Nelson makes them sound. They know the Lobbyist are paying him, Mr. Ben Nelson is just mad because we called him on his game.
I am sure Ben Nelson has been feeding them his platform, it is time they heard another side.

Sounds like a not so veiled threat.

Maybe if these groups would simply make donations to his reelection fund he might be more inclined to vote their way. But trying to shame him into it is just wrong as far as the Senator is concerned.

Now he has to go back to a fundraiser sponsored by Big Insurance, Big Pharma or Big Healthcare, while he is working for his constituents.

His campaign slogan should be "Vote for me or die."
