Reuters:

DETROIT (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co said on Friday that it is recalling another 440,000 vehicles -- including some of its best-selling Accord and Civic models -- for a potentially lethal airbag defect.

Honda said that the airbag inflators in some of its top-selling sedans can rupture because of too much air pressure causing metal fragments to shoot through the airbag and strike vehicle occupants.

Wait. This recall is good news. Typical Honda/Toyota business model is to ignore the problem and spemnd an extra few million covering it up. For a Japanese auto maker to actually admit one of their many, many, many quality problems rather than let dangerous cars stay on the road and relying on the general self-loathing pyschosis of most american Japanese car buyers is actually a big step. Typically they foillow the Toyota FJCruiser tie recall model and just ignore it and spend the money on a PR blitz instead.

that means the americans working in assembly plants get paid. or are those people not sufficiently american enough?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:35 PM on 08/01/2009

Yeah, how many employees are here compared with the big 3? And get paid, yes, but what do you think these workers would get paid if they didn't have to keep up with union wages? Stop trying to martyr these companies... they are companies just like other company and news like this shows that all they really care about in the end is the bottom line.

Putting a picture of my car (the Fit/Jazz) on a post about Civic and Accord recalls scared me unnecessarily.

After 10,000 miles in less than 3 months, I love my Fit madly. It is quote literally the perfect car.

I had the same reaction! I love my Fit to death, I only wish Honda would add a sunroof/moonroof, then it would be perfect :)

Made in America...used to be a Japanese car, that's when it earned it's good name and performance. Now made here, not so much.

What this means is that they applied the 'formula' and found that the cost of compensation payouts to victims (or their families) who were injured, killed or permanently disabled as a result of the 'flaw' was more than the cost of recalling all the affected cars and fixing it. If the punitive payout is less than the cost of fixing the flaw, most large manufacturers tend not to bother doing a recall.

More proof that the myth is false that Japanese cars have higher quality.

The mainstream media tends to downplay re calls from the import brands. The Detroit 3 tend to be targeted more than the imports. The safety issues that Ralph Nader exposed about GM's Corvair may have been valid. But during that time Nader could have easily targeted the VW Beetle for questionable safety issues. It was easier to target big bad GM than a foreign automaker in the 1960's. Its easier for the import brands to ignore a possible recall because import carmakers can do no wrong and domestic automakers can do no right with regards to the mainstream media and auto enthusiast publications such as Car & Driver magazine.

No, we watch and check for recall issues whatever the car if we have any brains at all. Your overgeneralizations are tiresome.

I saw the headline 'airbag' and thought it was about Congress. Sorry!

lol. Easy to understand your confusion, but it would have read "non-functioning" airbag if the reference was to our illustrious political elite.

BUY AMERICAN and save your job

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:35 PM on 07/31/2009

there is no such thing as "american" brand. Hondas and Toyotas assembled or manufactured in the US by american workers are as much american as gm or ford or chrysler.

I'll buy American when they can give me what I want at a price I want with the features I want. We've owned Volvos for years because of their dependibility, their sturdiness, and the fact that I can get a dryer or dishwasher in the back of my station wagon if need be. And our 1986 Volvo still gets over 25 mpg and my husband can work on it. Show me something comparable and we'll consider it. Our other car is a 1989 Toyota Cressida, BTW. Still running strong, comfortable to ride in, and yes, my husband can be its auto mechanic as well.

Sorry to interrupt your patriotic plug there but personally, I am always relieved whenever any large manufacturer does a recall because for every one that does, there are many others including American ones who aren't going to recall dangerously defective products because it costs them less to pay compensation to victims. This is not a home-grown vs foreign issue but a large maufacturer vs little consumer issue. Doing a recall is the more cost effective option for the manufacturer, which is the only reason why one is done but it will also have the side effect of saving many lives and for that I am grateful.

There are more clinks! I bought a 2008 civic hybrid and the tires were shot at 20000 miles! After calling honda america they told me what should I expect the tires on these cars are good for only 30000 miles max. This happened on the day GM filed for bankruptcy. The gas mileage on the hiway sucks!

There is a problem with one of the alignment parts but Honda refuses to do a recall. I am not sure which part it is, but If you don't get this fixed your tires never will last long.

Honda will never do a recall if they can help it. Same with Toyota. You'd have to be talking a risk of epic undeniable life threatening proportions before they'd ever admit it.

Same thing with my sisters CRV-4. But of course this was JUST a mistake, it had nothing to do with the overall quality of the Japanese product.
