Janeane Garofalo

The Guardian:

Janeane Garofalo is talking about how it felt to have her head blown off by Trey Parker and Matt Stone in Team America: World Police. "I didn't like that at all," says the actor and comedian. "I didn't see it, but I know about it. The only upside to it was I was given far more credit for being famous that I've ever been given in my life." A long-standing opponent of the war in Iraq and the Bush administration, Garofalo was portrayed in the movie as an empty-headed harpy, joining Alec Baldwin and Tim Robbins as appeasing stooges to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il.

"What am I getting my head blown off for? For speaking out against an immoral, illegal and unjustified invasion and occupation? What they did was cowardly. To try and get yourself off the hook by saying we're equal-opportunity offenders, it doesn't mean shit to me."

Janeane is one of those attractive women who go out of their way to play down their looks. I guess she believes that will help her be taken more seriously.

Still she is smart, funny, opinionated and fearless. I don't always agree with her but I like her anyway.

I love Jeneane, I wish there were more women in the media like her. She's bold, intelligent, interesting, opinionated and hasn't dedicated her career to being mold.

Garafalo and Margaret Cho are two of the least funny people on the planet. Off hand, the only worse comedians (and I use that term very loosely) are Dice Clay, Pauly Shore, and Carlos Mencia.

I don't expect every stand up to be Richard Pryor, but is it too much to ask that they make me laugh ONCE IN A WHILE?

Honestly, I don't know why Janeane is still harping on Team America. It was made back in 2004, nearly 5 years ago. It's not that good of a film, and now it's completely dated. The film's humour was childish, stupid, and worst of all, NOT FUNNY.

It's also an awkard looking film. The decision to use marionettes was bizarre, and not good bizarre. It didn't make any thematical sense.

Not to mention, they lampooned a lot of left wing celebrities in that film, not just her. Their parody of Michael Moore as fat and eating tons of hot dogs was just as lame as their parody of her, but you don't see Moore complaining about it 5 years later.

She should just let it go because the movie wasn't that good to begin with. It's a waste of time to harp on it.

Having said that, she's still pretty cool.

I've never seen Garofalo's standup routine, but I did see her on Keith Olbermann after the Tea Parties back in April. I'd been to one of the Tea Parties in MN and her characterization of what they were and who attended them was obviously distorted and baseless. Olbermann, who was at the time (and still is) trapped in a pointless tug-o-war with Fox News, sat by and chuckled. Neither she nor he had a clue but nevertheless were so smug in their own locked-in views. Whether you're on the left or on the right, the video of her comments is disturbing for how casually she accuses all Tea-party attendees of being racists. Olbermann clearly meant to discredit the gatherings from the start, not the least because Fox was publicizing them. What the majority of people attending were there for was to protest excesses of government, simple as that and not terribly threatening, but Olbermann makes his own Tea Bagging jokes (because, like Anderson Cooper who did the same, he's such an honest, credible journalist) before introducing Ms. Garofalo.

She is quick to stereotype and to paint with a broad brush, but a good actress and very funny on non-political subjects.

I saw her do stand up once and she did her entire act reading off of 3x5 cards. She also didn't seem to care about her appearance. It was not a good night for her or the audience. Kind of surprised she's still doing stand up.

Many stand up comics will work out the kinks in new material by using index cards in small markets or small audience venues before taking it out on the road.
Take note the next time you see the NBC ad showing Jay Leno doing exactly that.

As for not liking what she was wearing? That's your problem.

If it wasn't for that detestable character she played in the last season of "24", she would have no carreer at all. She would be some washed up comedian with oily hair and tattoos that Keith Olbermann has on his show to bash conservatives.
