'Defying Gravity' Launches Sex Into Space

LAURI NEFF   07/31/09 01:11 PM ET   AP

Defying Gravity

NEW YORK — Put four men and four women on a six-year space mission and what happens?

Things "get fun pretty quickly," says Ron Livingston, star of the new ABC summer series "Defying Gravity."

The sci-fi show, which debuts Sunday with a two-hour episode at 9 p.m. EDT, has a real saucy side, as you would expect from the creators behind "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy." Naked bodies float around from time to time, sometimes engaged in simulated sex.

Livingston, who played Carrie Bradshaw's boy pal Jack Berger on "Sex and the City," says "Defying Gravity" producers wanted a show for both men and women, "something that was sleek and sexy and exciting."

The series involves a crew whose mission is to study the solar system but who soon find out that there's a mysterious, secondary agenda; strange things start happening onboard. Livingston's Maddux Donner, commander of the spaceship, is thrust into a romantic triangle when he joins up and finds two ex-girlfriends on board.

Malik Yoba co-stars as the ship's co-pilot.

If Defying Gravity is being called -- by its own producers and stars, no less -- "Grey's Anatomy in space," then why don't I just keep watching Grey's Anatomy? I've never thought for a second that Grey's Anatomy would be better if it took place in space.

Since a friend had to back out of us going to see the latest Harry Potter in IMAX, I decided to watch "DEFYING GRAVITY".

Expected to hate it.

I LOVED IT!

Cast works well together.
Love the various mysteries surrounding the scenario.
And I appreciate it's understated approach and style.
Now I'll be watching.

LLNYRN - don't you work for Disney? I recall that you work for Disney/ABC...

NYJoe,

I don't know where you got that one from.
I don't and never have worked for Disney.

Heck.
I've never even stepped foot in Disney Land/World.

I wish I did work for Disney.
Would be making a LOT more than I am now for sure.

We can expect hetro sex only, I'm sure. Don't ask, don't Telstar.
09:26 PM on 08/02/2009
I don't think the show has some sort of heterosexual agenda... it's just a normal tv show. Say what you want, I don't think homo sex on primetime tv will be seen as normal anytime soon.

Makes me wonder about all the men only space mssions over the past 40 years. Surely there have been a few reach-arounds up in the space station. At least one can only hope, for the sake of the astronauts...

Don't bother to set your machine to record it every week. ABC stands for Already Been Cancelled. I'm still p.o'd they cancelled "Life on Mars."

UH--Has there ever been any documentation of ACTUAL sex in space? Sounds like a more interesting experiment than most of the other biological experiments they have tried and probably a lot more fun. I would imagine if anyone would do it, it would be the Russians.

So, they had sex in space? It's been documented?
11:35 PM on 08/01/2009
They are trying to lure us with sex. Cheap. What really matters is if the show is actually GOOD! Is it well written and acted? I think this show is just summer filler.

Livingston is known amongst men for Band of Brothers and Office Space- both cult classics.
He's maybe expanding his comic sex appeal thing with this one-time "summer series".

A man's got to feed his family.

Apparently HP editors are women and trapped in a bubble.

Office Space was so funny - the entire cast was great but Gary Cole and Stephen Root were hysterical.

I thought Band of Brothers was one of the best shows I have ever seen. It was the first time I had seen Livingston, and I've like him ever since. It was also the first time I had seen Damian Lewis, I'm still mad Life got cancelled.

I bought the Band of Brothers series for my dad (whose father was a pilot in WWII) and when he moved to NY and I could no longer borrow it I bought the series for myself. Great all-around acting by the entire cast and the interviews with the actual vets were fantastic.

so instead of horn y surgeons we have horn y astronauts.

cant understand why people like grey's anatomy when there were real series like the wire. please. ellen pompeo vs. sonja sohn? no contest.
