Shakira's She Wolf Video: Cage Dancing Contortion Moves (VIDEO)

Shakira is back and shes giving Beyonce a run for the money in the big hair, asymmetrical costume, flexible hips arena of music videos.

For her new song She Wolf the Colombian dynamo dances in a cage wearing a nude bodysuit and doing contortionist moves for some scenes and dons an asymmetrically spliced black unitard while showing off her belly dancing-skilled torso in others.

The level of cynicism and smugness displayed in this comment section is amazing. That said, here's something about the video: It's totally new, different, original. It is simply Shakira. The disco beat is reminiscent of Italo-disco, and i think she did a great job with it. It may be just the thing we need. The interpretation of the theme through movement is simply outstanding. I've yet to see a performer express the wild and natural world through movement so perfectly. Shakira is absolutely breathtaking and for those who know something about dance, this is great work. For the past couple of days I looked through a few pop videos, and they were without exception (except Shakira) the same: lyrically vapid, musically banal and the dance moves are clones among clones among clones. I then switched to "She Wolf" and this time I could see the edginess of this video. It is definitely not your regular Pop delivery. It's raw, natural, fierce, edgy. It conjures images of a wild animal through the use of movement; It is simply brilliant. Pop has no edge, and Shakira just gave it a heavy dose. She also just kicked us all into the new decade as far as dance music goes.

I feel like a lone voice in the post wilderness.
Shakira is not my usual style of music, by any means, but as a fan of raqs sharqi, I always enjoy her dancing. Her moves verge on contortion, which remind me of the transformation from human to wolf - a metaphor for releasing the holds of society and reverting to the beast we are within. I think her voice matches well with its ululating quality, both with her dance style and the theme of lycanthropy in this song.
As to the cage, I found it to be an appropriate choice to represent the desire of many people to control the very wild qualities they were attracted to in their partner in the first place. The penultimate scene where she falls into the closet acts as her return to humanity.
The ending was her returning to the 'marriage bed', but on her own terms.
Perhaps I over-analyze things, but I absolutely enjoyed the video. Some might see this as misogynistic, or exploitive, but I find it a sly commentary on female sexuality at its most mythic and feared.
Plus, in the words of Rate-A-Record from American Bandstand, 'Its got a good beat and you can dance to it.'

Yeah, I pretty much got that that was supposed to be the idea. I just didn't get the impression that she was being driven by anything primal within. It looked more like following a script. She seemed disconnected, like the people in an Edward Hopper painting. That doesn't fit well with the she-wolf theme.
