Harvard Scholar

CHILMARK, Mass. — Black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. on Sunday joked about his arrest by a white police officer, but also described receiving death threats and dreaming about being arrested at the White House.

In his first public appearance since sharing a beer at the White House on Thursday with the officer and President Barack Obama, Gates said the national debate over racial profiling sparked by his arrest shows that issues of class and race still run "profoundly deep" in the United States.

"They have not been resolved at all," he said, speaking to a crowd of more than 150 who came to see him at the Martha's Vineyard Book Festival.

Gates was mostly light-hearted during his speech and even poked fun at himself after a man in the crowd told him he admired his sense of humor.

"I should have been funnier in the kitchen of my house on July 16," he said.

But Gates also described how the incident and the subsequent national debate affected him personally. He said he had to shut down his public e-mail and change his cell phone number after receiving numerous death and bomb threats, including one that read, "You should die; you're a racist."

Gates was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge at his Cambridge home after police responded to a 911 call about a possible burglary.

The officer who arrested him, Sgt. James Crowley, said Gates became belligerent and called him a racist after he asked for identification. Gates accused police of racial profiling and called Crowley a "rogue cop."

The charge was dropped.

Obama stepped into the fray during a White House news conference when he said Cambridge police had "acted stupidly." He later said he should have chosen his words more carefully and invited the two men to the White House for a beer.

Gates said that the night before he went to the White House, he dreamed about getting arrested there.

When the two first came face to face in the White House, Gates said that both he and his family and Crowley and his family "looked like a deer caught in headlights."

He said Crowley looked "so relieved" when he shook his hand, and the two were able to find humor in the media frenzy unleashed by his arrest.

Gates said he and Crowley discussed meeting again privately – either going to lunch or taking in a Boston Red Sox or Celtics game – or having their two families go out to dinner together.

"I offered to get his kids into Harvard if he doesn't arrest me again," he said, drawing loud laughter from the audience.

Gates appeared at the festival to promote his 2009 book, "In Search of Our Roots: How 19 Extraordinary African Americans Reclaimed Their Past." The book traces the family trees of black celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Chris Rock.

When questioned by reporters after his speech, Gates would not comment on whether he still believes race played a role in his arrest.

He said he wants to produce a documentary from both the perspective of police and people who have been victims of racial profiling so "Americans can understand that you can have two equally valid perceptions of the same event."

"Racial profiling is a huge problem in this country and a serious problem, and I intend to devote my resources to fighting it," he said.

Gates called what happened to him "small potatoes," and said he is more concerned about people who don't have Harvard lawyers to represent them.

"At the same time, it's important that all of us are keenly and acutely sensitive to all the police do for the good of the community," he said.

What I learned is that a white police officer better not arrest a black man, no matter if he has been uncooperative in a B & E investigation, is out of control in public on his porch and inciting a crowd with racial language.

This does not apply to any other group. Just black men. They might know the President!

Hmmm...well, he clearly WAS cooperative, or else he could've been arrested for not being so. Gates was right to refuse the officers' initial request to step out on the porch, because he could've handcuffed him immediately.

The "racial language" occured in his HOME, not outside (unless you consider 'this is what happens to a black man in america" racial language).

The "public disturbance" was actually caused by the POLICE. Crowley decided to call in reinforcements to the scene...anyone who is ALIVE knows that multiple cop cars = people stopping by to see what all the commotion is. Crowds had already gathered by the time Gates came out of his home. NOT before.

Lastly, the investigation was OVER when Gates got arrested. He had already verified that he was the rightful owner of the place.

The cop was wrong all along.

No you are wrong, the cop was right period. Gates should have shown his ID to someone who was just doing their job and been polite.

You are wrong. The policeman was wrong. It is a "he said, he said thing". Also, the Crowley's report says there were two black men, the caller Ms. Whalen says she did not say there were two black men and that the only thing she said to Crowley, "I am the one who made the call and, Crowley told her to wait there", she says Crowley never came back to her. The 9-1-1 tape released did not have Ms. Whalen saying "two black men". The 9-1-1 operator asked, "hispanic or black" if that is not racial profiling, please tell me differently. Racial profiling is real and deep in America. You can take whatever side you wish to take, but racism is real, very real and very deep. Believe it or not, my husband retired from the police department and he would always tell me what to expect and/or do, and it was not good when stopped by a policeman. So, get real and think for yourself VOTERremorse, racism is real.

"Gates said the national debate over racial profiling sparked by his arrest shows that issues of class and race still run "profoundly deep" in the United States."

I was very impressed with him pointing out class as well as race.

I can tell you this, if Gates and Crowley would have started the conversation with each denigrating the other the way the people on this message board denigrate these two men, the conversation would have not gone anywhere.

Time for everyone to put their mature hat on, and go out there and respectfully talk to someone that doesn't look like you.

Then hugs all around.

I would not dignify this event by going anywhere with this lier. Sgt Crowley lied in his police report, and until he admits that he's a lier I would have no further contact with him. this was NOT about disorderly conduct, this was about race and class. Doctor Gates and oh yes he is a Dr. the man has a PHD, was gracious in that he sent flowers to the 9-11 caller and apologized that she has been pulled into this stupid affair. Every bit of this is Crowley's fault, yes it is his job to "protect and serve" but it is also his job the ensure public safety by not escalating a situation to the levels that happened that day

Gates is getting sold down the river. The irony is that he's participating in the bidding.

It's really a shame that people resort to calling with death threats.

The woman did the right thing. In fact, I NEVER thought she was at fault. The police were content to distort the word of a witness to support their racist abuse.

As an academic, Gates could probably learn something from this encounter that somehow all whites are not privileged and about some of the day to day concerns of the working class person. I am sure that Crowley has many economic anxieties and concerns unfamiliar to Gates, as a very upper middle class, successful, world renowned scholar.

I'm sure Crowley could learn NOT to arrest somebody in their own home. Crowley should also learn not to file false a police report and be honest because you could be ruining the life of a prominent person.

Thank You!

And once Crowley learns these things, perhaps he could actually demonstrate remorse and humility by putting his ego aside (the very thing that caused this situation), and actually APOLOGIZE for having acted unprofessionally, violating Professor Gates' civil rights, and LYING on a police report.

The only thing Gates has to learn from the police officer is that they view all Black men as suspects.

This story was idiotic to begin with and has gone downhill from there. It belittles the real problem that the United States has with racial division and turns into some kind of Reality Show.

It was a false arrest, and the report slandered the woman who reported the possible crime (that never took place) by blaming his racial midset on her.
So enough.
I don't want to see either Gates' film on racial profiling or Crowley become the new Joe the Plumber, so will the Keystone Kop and the Nutty Professor please go away?
