LOS ANGELES — Steven Spielberg has a giant rabbit on his mind for his next film.

Spielberg is directing a new take on "Harvey," the story of a big-hearted eccentric who's branded a crackpot for claiming to have a 6-foot tall invisible rabbit buddy.

James Stewart starred in the classic 1950 version of "Harvey," which was based on Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Novelist Jonathan Tropper adapted Chase's play for Spielberg's version, an update set in contemporary times.

Casting is just starting, with production expected to begin early next year.

The film is a co-production between Spielberg's DreamWorks Studio and 20th Century Fox. A release date hasn't been announced, but a Fox spokesman said the studio is looking to have the film in theaters late next year.

What a shame and what an ego.
He must be determined to ruin as many classics as possible before he retires/passes/freezes his body.

It was never one of my favs, altho I love jimmy stewart. But why remake this one of all the movies out there. Better yet, why remake a movie at all? I've really never understood that. The original is usually better.

I just hope it's under two hours. I'm tired of spending money on over-long movies. Public Enemies and Funny People were each an hour too long.

Sometimes it is better to leave well enough alone. Think about it Steven. Another Close Encounters? Seriously?

Just please let the new version play homage to the original, which is a gem. 'Harvey is one of my favorite 'silverscreen classic' movies.

I cannot imagine anyone but Josephine Hull in the role of Veta.

Obviously you haven't seen the original, or you would know that even those talented ladies you mentioned, couldn't compete with Josephine Hull.

Who will play Jimmy Stewart's role? It's impossible, I cant think of anyone.
Oh I know...Robert Pattinson...he's just quirky enough. Plus it will do well at the box office that way because it will get the youth market. Maybe that generation can learn something from the story too. ^_^

How do you remake perfection? How about repainting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel next?

Art imitates life imitates art.

Digital Harvey is a satire about a special effects company that "puts the Harvey back into Harvey".

Everything coming out of Hollywood is a remake! Apparently no one has anything original anymore.
Leave this classic alone.

Tom Hanks will play the lead. It's Tom who wanted to get the movie made.

Hanks is the Stewart of this generation. Despite star status, both carried that down to earth "everyman" quality into their roles that makes them so believable.

oh pa-leaze, so your the one who bought into that horrible Spielberg/Agent P.R. comparison from 20 years ago?
I can't believe anybody believed that then or now... Hanks acting is like watching paint dry, and paint at least changes color from the beginning to the end.
