Chicago Sun-Times:
An 86-year-old woman was placed in custody Sunday afternoon in what Chicago police said was her 61st arrest for shoplifting after she allegedly took several items including anti-wrinkle cream from a North Side Dominick's Finer Foods.

I'm sure in many cases shop employees were too busy eyeing black shoppers to notice this woman ripping them off.

Mental illness. This woman probably suffers from some effects of being institutionalized. If you continue to commit crime that much, you must desperately want to go to jail. She needs some kind of mental health assistance not more jail time. I think she's "learned her lesson" by now.

Mental illness could be responsible for her troubles.. Another reason might be shopplifting has become a way of life. Legal trouble early in life can really limit your options later on down the road, especially when it comes to employment.
Not sure if that's the case with this woman, but I do know a few people that have gone the route she has due to the inability to find work. Perhaps after getting arrested and convicted a few times, she decided the punishment was worth the risk. It is/was/will be the cost of 'doing business.'
She was just arrested a day or so ago, that means she'll likely be arraigned in a few months (Sept./Oct). The state will likely ask her to plead out to 2 years or so (maybe less) sometime late fall. She gets 24 months, which she'll spend 4-5 of them behind bars during the coldest months of the winter. She'll get fed and have a place to sleep - no face creams, though.
When she gets out, I'm sure finding a job will prove to be next to impossible. So she roams the streets needing money, food, shelter, and yes, face cream. Well, even without money, she knows how to (or at least, try to) get the things she needs. With some 'luck', she'll be successful the first few trips to the grocery store. However, when 'luck' runs out, she'll be sitting in a cell waiting to be arraigned again.

I agree with you it is so sad, and Jerry23 is probably right too, it's the only attention she gets. We don't treat our elderly very well.
