Plaxico Burress

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress on weapons charges.

The grand jury did not indict his former teammate, Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce.

Prosecutors say the indictment charges Burress, 31, with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment.

The veteran receiver shot himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub in November. The gun was not licensed and no one initially called police to report the gunshot.

Burress and Pierce - who drove Burress to the hospital and took the gun to Burress's New Jersey home - both testified before the grand jury last week.

The Giants released Burress in April.

These NBA & NBA men need a life coach, they need people who really care about the outcome of their lives and their families. Why is that they continue to get in trouble like teenagers?

Uh, anyone know why the Rothlesburger case has received minimal coverage...is dog fighting and shooting yourself in a club more important than a rape allegation made against a Superbowl winning QB????

Perhaps because the woman has never filed a criminal complaint in the matter.

If she had filed a criminal complaint (I think within a month of the alleged incident) rather than do what she did - waited a year (probably the statute of limitations) and went straight for a civil suit for $$$$$$$

we might have all taken her a little more seriously. This is not about race, dude.

Unfortunately, for Mr Burress the bill in Congress that would have allowed carrying concealed weapons across State lines was defeated, and yes, it was a little late to benefit him, was voted down.

Just imagine how many more Professional Athletes, and others, who come in and out of your State would be 'packing heat.'

I gotta say, i don't think that matters. And that's an ignorant statement.
The cards are against him: unlicensed weapon, in public, etc.
What if someone was accidentally shot? (besides himself)
I think it's about time celebrity status people are brought to justice on criminal offenses, i don;t care who they are. You ef up, you take the hit.
That's really what this is about.
Michael Vick is a perfect example.

He still would have shot himself in the leg. I know we whites look really cool, but we're just like the rest of you...

Okay, I am not that interested in the story, but from what I read, he's being indicted and going to prison for having an unlicensed weapon? Come on? I mean is this over the top or what. I'm just sayin.......

Over the top....NO.

Glad he shot himself with the gun he slid in his sweatpants waistband before he shot whoever he felt he needed to carry the gun into the club for.

He's had a historically bad year that came to a justified end.

You don't carry illegal weapons to use legally....
Race has nothing to do with it.........
GROW UP.

Too bad Michael Vick is out of prision - they could have been an unstoppable combination in the prison league. I'm fairly certain there is an NFL QB in the system somewhere he can play with.

its an overkill and headhunting by the DA. Yeah, he was stupid, yeah the gun was unlicensed, but looking at the totality of the incident merits a financial fine rather than millions wasted in a court case.

oh and for those saying that it will act as a deterrent to others are delusional. Everyday, people around the city probably run around with unlicensed guns in public places,. The plaxico burres incident is not the "wake up call" for folks around.

This whole case should have been settled with an appropriate fine and record. Not wasting taxpayers money on useless trials, when real criminals are stealing more money down a few blocks in wall street.
He shot himself for crying out load.

Mr. Burress had an expired Concealed Carry from the State of Florida.

As a someone who was issued a Concealed Carry he had to take a class which includes instruction on Pistol care and safety, on Concealed Carry Regulations, and on State reciprocity on Concealed Carry. It also includes instruction about what happens if you break the law for which you are issued a permit.

Mr. Burress broke many laws with his handgun, all of which he should have known as he was permitted (although it was expired) by the State of Florida. He also shot the weapon in a crowded nightclub. His shot could have killed or injured many people, but in this circumstance he only shot himself.

Mr. Burress is a victim only of his own flagrant disregard of a law of which he should have been knowledgeable. Ignorance is no excuse for the disregard of the responsibility of gun ownership.

It seems that only Black men go to jail on "weapons" charges. Where is the NRA on this one?

Its not about that. In NYC, you bring an unlicensed gun into this city - and into a public place, no less - you go to jail. I agree that 4th amendment violations are rampant, but Plaxico brought this upon himself.
