CAIRO — Armed tribesmen attacked a fishing village in southeast Sudan where hundreds of displaced people were camped near a river, leaving at least 185 people, most of them women and children, dead in the worst violence in three months, a southern Sudan official said Monday.

A flare-up of tribal clashes in south Sudan over cattle and territory has left more 1,000 people killed so far this year. The violence is separate from the six-year-old conflict between rebels and government forces in Darfur, the vast western region of Sudan.

U.N. and local officials expressed concern that the violence in the south, which has increasingly targeted women and children, could hamper preparation for national and presidential elections scheduled for April 2010.

The elections are a key component of a deal that ended a 21-year civil war between Sudan's north and south in 2005. If violence prevents the voting, that could re-open a path to war.

The peace agreement created a semiautonomous government in the south, battered by the war and flooded with guns.

Sunday's violence is part of a series of attacks between southern tribes that have their roots in territorial claims or cattle theft. But local officials say recent attacks have been fueled by revenge and the widespread availability of arms.

Local Commissioner Goi Yol of Akobo County said a "huge" number of armed men attacked a makeshift village at dawn Sunday where families from the Lou-Nuer tribe moved in recent weeks in search of food. The camping area overlooks the Geni River, near the Ethiopian border, in Jongeli state.

Yol, who gave the death toll, blamed the attack on the rival Murle tribe, who have refused to observe a negotiated cease-fire after a series of tit-for-tat attacks earlier this year. Some 650 people from both tribes were killed in violence since March.

The armed men started shooting immediately, chasing civilians toward the river, he said. Two dozen soldiers who were stationed near the camp to protect the displaced families were overpowered and a dozen of them were killed.

"This was a coordinated and planned attack" because these people have been displaced in the area for three weeks. "Families are wiped out."

Yol said the three-hour attack left at least 31 people wounded and dozens of women and children still missing. County rescue teams pulled bodies from the river, where some were caught in fishing nets, he said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack, his spokesman said. Ban directed the U.N. mission in Sudan to act with local authorities to restore calm to the area.

The south's minister for internal affairs, Maj. Gen. Gier Chuang Aluong, said his ministry has asked the U.N. to send police to the area.

He said the lack of road networks in the south, in addition to the rainy season, is making the mobility of security forces difficult.

The minister said a program to disarm civilians that is part of the peace deal won't start in the large state of Jongeli until year's end, after the rain stops.

Disarmament is a major challenge in the region, which is awash with guns.

A forceful campaign to disarm civilians there in 2006 turned deadly.

Is this as sad as the fact that only two comments have been posted in over two days?

Are we speechless, or just ignorant and again brought down to the place of helplessness?

What makes us so calloused that human life mean nothing to us.
The most precious of society are the women and children yet they are the targets of those who
have murderous entente.

Our prayers go out to the fishing villiage that was attacked and the 185 displaced families mostly women and children who were murdered by armed tribesmen.

God is looking down on us with great sorrow as to mans inhumanity to man and the cruel way we treat each other.

We have a long way to go and we must never forget our people all over the world.

Lets remember to pray for the state of affairs around the world as many are dying by the millions
without Media coverage as to the plight of the horrendous conditions they are forced to suffer.

God bless All of our People.

I think you got that one absolutely correct. People raise all kinds of 'heck' over abortion issues - but don't give a dam* about a human once they are born. Or is it because it's Africa that they don't care?

Pity and so sad.
