Obama Governors

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two of President Barack Obama's economic heavyweights said middle-class taxes might have to go up to pare budget deficits or to pay for the proposed overhaul of the nation's health care system.

The tough talk from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers on Sunday capped a week that brought rare good news for the economy: The worst recession in the United States since World War II could be on the verge of ending. Even so, officials appeared willing to extend unemployment benefits.

Geithner and Summers both sidestepped questions on Obama's intentions about taxes. Geithner said the White House was not ready to rule out a tax hike to reduce the federal deficit; Summers said Obama's proposed health care overhaul needs funding from somewhere.

"There is a lot that can happen over time," Summers said, adding that the administration believes "it is never a good idea to absolutely rule things out, no matter what."

During his presidential campaign, Obama repeatedly pledged "you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime." But the simple reality remains that his ambitious overhaul of how Americans receive health care -- promised without increasing the federal deficit -- must be paid for.

"If we want an economy that's going to grow in the future, people have to understand we have to bring those deficits down. And it's going to be difficult, hard for us to do. And the path to that is through health care reform," Geithner said. "We're not at the point yet where we're going to make a judgment about what it's going to take."

On Friday, a report detailed the economy dipped only slightly in the second quarter of this year -- falling at a 1 percent annual pace, better than expected. The government report permitted optimism that the economic downturn is approaching its end.

The president cautioned against instant turnaround, though.

"Well as I've said, I think we maybe are beginning to see the end of the recession but it's still going to be some time before we are seeing companies hiring again, that's usually the last thing that happens," Obama said in an interview with Univision that aired on Sunday.

"So I think we are still going to have a tough remainder of the year -- probably until next year -- but, you know, at least what we are seeing -- we've pulled back from the possibility of a depression. That's not the danger."

And many analysts think the economy is starting to grow again in the current quarter, setting up a long-awaited recovery.

"Most private forecasters -- and let's use their judgment -- suggest you're going to see unemployment start to come down maybe beginning in the second half of next year," Geithner said, adding those same economists predict positive growth during the second half of this year.

At the same time, Geithner and other administration officials are contemplating how to ask Congress to extend -- again -- unemployment benefits for the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs in recent months. The proposal drew measured support from Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., as long as the benefits are drawn from the already approved economic stimulus package.

"We need to take care of those who are unemployed, but we also need to make sure they get jobs," he said.

Those jobs, though, are still elusive. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said the economy is slowly coming back and that he is "pretty sure we've already seen the bottom."

"Collapse, I think, is now off the table. We were teetering for a while," he said.

Geithner and Greenspan appeared on ABC's "This Week." Summers appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" and CBS' "Face the Nation." DeMint was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday."

Excuse me, but during the Bush years the wealthiest got tax breaks. Now it's time for the middle class and poorer folks to get their tax breaks and keep them. Tax the wealthiest people who have nothing more to worry about than keeping up expenses on their mansions. Like Summers for instance. He's the absolutely wrong person to decide these things because he's one of the top 5%. This is outrageous! Even Warren Buffett has said that this secretary pays in at a higher tax level than he does. Where are the other economic advisers like Buffett and Volker who have some sense in their heads?

It’s a New Dawn Arising Ahead….

HANG IN THERE PRESIDENT….the majority of people are resistant to change…especially the ones that are not effected either way by the issue’s of our Nation and simply can’t get over themselves. GO PREZ GO….don’t give into these NEGATIVE, WEAKNEED, SPINELESS GREEDY IDIOTS that have no compassion for the UNINSURED! And for the difficulties you are having in Congress, ask if they would like to have all their BENEFITS taken away…awhile they waste precious time debating this important issue of concern….Bottom line…it’s hard to put Faith & Hope in something another hasn’t seen…but if we only BELIEVE, change for a Better World may be seen. TAKES GUTS FOLKS. If we do not try to make a Change then where will we be? What then will our nation look like? CHANGE OR LIVE IN A NATION that will remind you of an old movie entitled “SOY LENT GREEN”. So which path do you choose…the most difficult or the later? The easiest path most traveled, will result in a pathetic society of desperation for ALL MANKIND………….

UPDATE: Turns out Geithner and Summers do not speak for the President. Surprise!

I'd bet a million dollars (if I had it) that middle class taxes will not go up. I'd bet on it.

Why? Because Obama promised it, that's why. These guys off running their mouths are just hoping to save their millionaire tax brackets from increased taxes.

Isn't it funny how when they start talking about taxing the rich (those who make a million or more/year) then all of the sudden commercials come out that Obama is raising everyone's taxes. Also, they start coming up with other ways to pay for it, by floating this rumor. Which will never happen under Obama.

Sorry rich bastahds, you are gonna have to step up and pay for the decade in which you pillaged.

I don't see any sign of this President raising taxes on the middle class or those making less than $250,000. I think the media put this back on the table because the wingnuts were not pushing this as an issue. Most of the commentators and media types are making an issue of this because they know that they will be affected by the cuts. Too many people spend too much time defending the corporations who are not paying their fair share taxes. The government gives corporations and rich individuals tax breaks but by the time they write off everything, the only people who end up paying taxes are the individual employees. How can these corporations justify their hugh salaries and bonuses when they are not paying their fair share of taxes. I hope this administration hold the corporation and rich people feet to the fire and make them pay their fair share of taxes.

we are finding out that is what happened here in California, too.

while we were working hard trying to get ahead and make ends meet, government was giving tax breaks, subsidies and incentives to large corporations. we have been too trusting.

Obama can say goodbye to a second term if he raises taxes to pay for a health care plan. His whole campaign was about tax cuts for people making under $250,000. "Read my lips" doomed the first President Bush when he raised taxes. It doesn't matter the reason, it doesn't matter the necessity. People vote with their wallets, and they will never forgive for forget this kind of about-face.

I would be ok with raising taxes but only if comprehensive single payer system was what I was paying for with those taxes. I think most Americans concerned with this issue would agree.

I am being realistic, the rich never pay, and when they are threatened with it, they make it look like charity. Just like the Health Care Reform is making it look like charity to low income workers. I am not looking for that, I am looking for comprehensive health care reform. It is the most important thing for me at the moment.

The last time I went to a doctor (5 yrs ago) it cost me over $700, for a 2 minute visit that didn't solve anything. I was told I was a diabetic and that was it. No medication, no education, no treatment. The company I work for offers medical, with a 1,500 deductable and 2,000 limit. Not worth anything to me.

Why am I not surprised? Of course they are going to advocate raising taxes but it won't necessarily be to get any sort of health care reform; that will be done by cutting back on the only health care programs in the US: medicare and medaid. There is still a lot of debt associated with bailing out Wall St corporations and the big banks, although the tax payers are going to foot the bill for most of that. We really haven't seen Obama's health care REFORM bill and we haven't heard him talk about anything except restraining costs of our present "system". If he decides to raise taxes to support a health care reform, he'd better lay out the plans in great detail. But I really don't expect anything from him except gloss.
