A female gorilla 'Gana' tends to her two days old offspring at a zoo in Muenster, Germany. Twelve-year-old Gana's very public mourning for her last child gained widespread attention last year after the baby gorilla died of a severe intestinal infection at three months. Gana's new daughter was born early Sunday.

In last week’s New Scientist magazine, we were reminded that this is the Year of the Gorilla. New Scientist points out that, despite efforts by many conservation societies, such as World Wildlife Fund, gorillas are among the world’s most endangered species and may very well become extinct in the wild in a human generation. Gorillas remain at risk from habitat loss, the seemingly never-ending civil war in the Congo, poaching, the lucrative bushmeat trade (a form of near cannibalism, as well as a spreader of diseases like Ebola and precursors to AIDs like SIVs).

Enjoy the good news from the German zoo - it may be all the good news there is for our closest evolutionary cousins - except for Chimpanzees and Bonobos - for some time.
