New York Daily News:

A secret report predicts the Freedom Tower - billed as America's defiant answer to terrorism - won't be finished until 17 years after the 9/11 attacks.

A 2018 opening for the iconic, 1,776-foot building would come more than four years after the opening date the Port Authority trumpeted just 10 months ago, the government report found.

Good thing they rushed in and prevented a thorough investigation of the scene. They only had 17 years to get all of that steel shipped to china!

maybe they better hold off until we know the real truth behind 9/11.

This 'memorial' tower may be started in 2150 & it may be completed in 2190-if NYC hasn't crumbled into a ruin. Manhattan may be abandoned in 2175. Cities & neighborhoods frequently go into decline in the USA. Wall St & lower Manhattan are dying due to the meltdown of 9/15/08. Why build if nobody will rent space in a building? The Freedom tower is destined to be filled with NYC, NY State & Federal offices it it is ever built. That saved the Empire State Building in the 1930s, the WTC till 9/11/01. The commercial real estate bubble, while it's leaking & it has deflated hasn't broken, offically, yet.

By then Bin Laden will have died of old age. Those towers should have been rebuilt within 4 years. this is a national disgrace.

I disagree. I don't believe anyone would work in a tower at that location (I would not, for any salary). I'm all for a memorial tower on the site, but not an office building, until/unless we get to a place where there aren't so many people bent on destroying it.

Well.we have 700 billion of the, had to have immediately, stimulus bill (90%)..why not build the building and get people to work now..instead of building tunnels for turtles..honor the dead of the terrorists attack on our country.

Honestly, a small, tasteful memorial should have been built on the site (sans the orgiastic, self-worshiping, endless "search" for the "proper" design), and the rest of the site should have then been developed in the same manner as any other building site in New York. Why the hell does this thing have to be such a production? This is an embarrassment to the city. There was nothing architecturally striking about the original buildings that were there (they were just big), and damn near anything would be an improvement on their design. It really appears as if the whole project is grinding to a slow crawl as the developers, designers, and others try to secure windfall profits at the expense of the taxpayer. Is THAT what the legacy to that sorry, September 2001 event is to be?

they must have been built shoddily because they fell so easily into there own footprints...all three buildings..even the one that wasn't hit by a plane.

17 years? Really? I get the feeling that this is going to be like the second avenue subway line. I'll believe it when I see it.

Amazing, seventeen years? The Empire State Building took less than sixteen months to build from excavation to ribbon cutting. That was accomplished without the use of the technology available today. The more I see of today's world, the more respect I have for that thirties and forties generation, for their ethics, labors and sheer old-fashioned courage.

It could have been a beautiful park and it would have been finished years ago.
Sometimes it's okay to keep things simple instead of making a ton of money.
