DNC Blasts "Sham" Town Hall Protests

First Posted: 09/05/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:45 PM ET

Protest

In an email sent Wednesday morning, the Democratic National Committee labels recent town hall disruptions as "a sham," describing them as an orchestrated effort by the health care industry to "break the President and his agenda for change."

Jen O'Malley Dillon, Executive Director of the DNC, says the protests "are being organized and largely paid for by Washington special interests and insurance companies who are desperate to block reform." She accuses them of using "lies" and "fear" to sustain the status quo.

"Health insurance reform is about our lives, our jobs, and our families -- we can't let distortions and intimidation get in the way," writes O'Malley, before offering five facts about the protests:

1. These disruptions are being funded and organized by out-of-district special-interest groups and insurance companies who fear that health insurance reform could help Americans, but hurt their bottom line. A group run by the same folks who made the "Swiftboat" ads against John Kerry is compiling a list of congressional events in August to disrupt. An insurance company coalition has stationed employees in 30 states to track where local lawmakers hold town-hall meetings.

2. People are scared because they are being fed frightening lies. These crowds are being riled up by anti-reform lies being spread by industry front groups that invent smears to tarnish the President's plan and scare voters. But as the President has repeatedly said, health insurance reform will create more health care choices for the American people, not reduce them. If you like your insurance or your doctor, you can keep them, and there is no "government takeover" in any part of any plan supported by the President or Congress.

3. Their actions are getting more extreme. Texas protesters brought signs displaying a tombstone for Rep. Lloyd Doggett and using the "SS" symbol to compare President Obama's policies to Nazism. Maryland Rep. Frank Kratovil was hanged in effigy outside his district office. Rep. Tim Bishop of New York had to be escorted to his car by police after an angry few disrupted his town hall meeting -- and more examples like this come in every day. And they have gone beyond just trying to derail the President's health insurance reform plans, they are trying to "break" the President himself and ruin his Presidency.

4. Their goal is to disrupt and shut down legitimate conversation. Protesters have routinely shouted down representatives trying to engage in constructive dialogue with voters, and done everything they can to intimidate and silence regular people who just want more information. One attack group has even published a manual instructing protesters to "stand up and shout" and try to "rattle" lawmakers to prevent them from talking peacefully with their constituents.

5. Republican leadership is irresponsibly cheering on the thuggish crowds. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner issued a statement applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to "a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress."

"It's time to expose this charade, before it gets more dangerous," the email concludes. "Now, more than ever, we need to stand strong together and defend the truth."

The email is part of a larger effort by the DNC to combat angry disruptions in recent town hall meetings hosted by Democratic lawmakers. It was sent just hours after the DNC released a new television ad attacking the GOP and blaming them for "organizing angry mobs" in an effort to undermine President Obama and Democrats.

My husband are very well informed on issues, and in our 70's. We are totally disgusted with the seniors flocking to these town hall meetings and screeching "keep your government hands off my health care". Well, that would be Medicare, Medicare RX, social security, etc. We say these "government run" benefits for seniors should instantly be taken away from these senior loud mouths who are trying to drown out the conversation which concerns the younger generations in a serious way. Shame on these wingnuts for trying to destroy democracy by shutting down honest debate on one of the most important subjects of our lifetime.

I always find it interesting that opponents to health care reform argue that it will be the "death to all of us" or "it will restrict our choices" or "medical decisions will be made by bureaucrats".

It is the current unregulated capitalistic private insurance companies who are actually fulfilling their worst nightmare right now. "Death to us all" - private insurance companies are literally killing patients right now by denying lifesaving care like in the case of Cigna's denial of Natalie Sarkisyan's care.

"It will restrict our choices" which is exactly what our private insurers are doing. I have private coverage myself as a medical professional through my hospital who employs me. I'm restricted to a list of doctors I can see and also to only 4 hospitals in the local Tampa Bay area and if I seek medical care outside of this my insurer will put a majority of the financial cost on me so if I want somewhat affordable medical care I'm forced into their restrictive measures.

"Medical decisions will be made by bureaucrats" - in the private insurance market medical decisions aren't made by myself or my doctor but rather by bureaucrats (executives and internal business analysts) from my private insurers when they decide what is covered and what is not.

Healthcare reform would put a stop to all this and I've actually researched for hours on what the best way to achieve this is. Here's my solutions - http://bit.ly/9QLV8

To the contrary, the (dishonest) Republicans are the shame of America and the world.

Sorry, but no, Kapur. These are not sham town hall meetings - those people are not ACORN members but are real people! Last time I checked, this was still America and we citizens have a constitutional right to have our opinions heard. The DNC and the obama administration have become truly pathetic in their attempt to vilify our fellow citizens simply because they disagree with his policies. Obama and the DNC's efforts to portray these protesters as "crazy, violent, "astroturf," idiots,' etc, clearly shows that 1) they are THUG Politicians, not statesmen or leaders, 2) obama has no idea how to be a president and has risen to the level of his incompetence much sooner than I expected, 3) it is the dems and libs who are "out of touch" with average Americans, and 4) they know their agenda is NOT what Americans want; it is not the "change" they expected, and that is why they are trying so desperately to get everything passed FAST become more of us realize what they are up to and vote their sorry a**es out of office!

The DNC is allowing these rude and loud people to voice their opinion, haven't seen any of them drug out of the meetings and arrested.

Unlike the GOP town halls where people were drug out and arrested for wearing tee-shirts with opinions on them that were opposing to the GOP ideology.

The DNC is allowing these people to voice their opinion no matter how disruptive they become while others try to do the same, while to GOP will not even allow silent opposition in theirs.

So you want to talk about thugs look with in your own party and root them out first because no one stopped any of these people from loudly voicing their opinion at DNC town halls but people wearing shirts with opposing views were dragged out of GOP town halls.

America has come to the realization and they have voted the sorry people out of office. A few more in 2010 and then we can finally get some ting that will help all Americans done.

"Real People" - are there any other kind?

Fact remains, these people are pawns of the health insurance companies.

I think we need to grow a pair and show up at these meetings and shut the shouters and liars down. Use their signs against them and make them shut the fu%^ up! Chase them out of the town hall meeting if necessary. I have no problem doing that as I've had enough of their b.s. and chaos that they're causing in our country.

That would escalate the situation.

Hand one of them a mike and ask them to state their reasoning.....

Carry signs that say "You have no right to be rude" and "Shouting is not discourse"

Or better yet, blank signs, and just stand in front of them blocking their view.....

I agree with u on an emotional level but we can't stoop to their level. I think your right we need to show up at these events but we need to offer a legitimate challenge like Gidster offered up. I really think reason and self control is a brutal weapon against these nuts. I'm going to encourage my friends and family to go to these events and counter these thugs and I hope you do too! I don't necessarily agree with all parts of the administrations policies but I do believe in a fair and open discourse and these turkeys are stealing that from me.

We need to keep the push for health care going and not let up! Let's let our representatives know just how strongly we feel about health care!

In order to do that, I am turning to you for your help - I have set up a petition to have paid health care
removed from our representatives in Congress until such time as they reform
health care - to include a strong public option - for 'we the people' who they
are supposed to represent.

If you agree with what I am doing - I am going to ask you to do what I have been
asking others to do...sign it, then spread the word to anyone and everyone you know!

I am but one person - and cannot make a difference on my own...but there is
strength in numbers and with assistance and determination, all things are
possible! Please do what you can to help us further the cause of health care with a strong public option! Thank you!

DNC: just limit town hall audiences to local residents. Perhaps limited to local registered voters.

Plan B: Offer a disrupter, without preparation, 5 minutes at the podium to jibber and babble. Make him/her the poster boy/girl. Photo-op the h.ell out of it.

Plan C- Contact Americans for Prosperity, pretend to be a teabagger, and see if they'll provide transportation for you and your friends to the townhall meeting closest to you. Every seat you and your friends take up, is one less seat for an actual teabagger.

"Fight the Screamers, Show Up"

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/5/762307/-Fight-the-Screamers:-Show-Up

There must not be one more town hall in this country where fringe groups outnumber sane Americans. It's stops today.

This link has the action plan to thwart the same fake grassroots noise machine that was used during the Florida recount.

Every town must meet force with force. They are not going to win. Not this time.

They are also counting on smaller numbers in the 2010 elections. They think that the masses that came out to vote last time will stay home in 2010. That's always been the status quo. It's up to us to make sure the lines for mid-term elections are just as long as they were for the 08. Low voter turn out let's them sneak in. Remind me there are how many blue states now?

Wal-Mart- the largest Employer in US- What Health insurance do they offer ALL of their employees?
07:34 PM on 08/05/2009
This story makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time. First, the insistance of the wh, bo and dems that these angry people showing up at these town hall meetings are only there because of some big bad business lobbyist group, or they're paid is outrageous. People have become angry with the dems and bo over the sneekiness and tactics used to pass the porkulus and cap-n-tax bills. Not only were they a sham but they were rammed down the taxpayers throats without anyone being able to know what was in the bills. Now a lot of people do not trust them with any bill much less their health care reform.
bo and dems need to acknowledge people's genuine concerns over their health care reform. Instead they use rule #12: "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Besides, I know it's got to be hard for bo and dems for the opposition to borrow some of their tactics. Of course, this does not include some of the low tactics of such groups as acorn or moveon.org.

sorry mason(are you really a mason or just a wanta be?)
But that is not what these paid crazies with their nazi signs (who are upset because this country is in a mess after the replugs destroyed it- but they can't blame themselves) are inciting violence- for something they and their own party (with the help of corporations) created
they need to take responsibility for voting for these people

they had ideas- not good ideas
