Celebs demand that their numerous servants and other members of their households sign confidentiality agreements. Therefore, a couple who comes off like, well, The Cleavers could be abusing and neglecting their children in horrifying ways, but the public would never know it.
I recently heard someone in the supermarket point to a tabloid cover photo of a celeb and tell her boyfriend, "She's really nice, but this one is a b*tch!"
In a friendly tone, I asked her, "How would you know?
How does anyone know? Can you imagine being a world-famous, adored, worshipped, revered celeb, or an equally-reviled one, or one who is treated like a god or goddess until their movie (or record) flops and they become "Hollywood poison"? Celebs have no privacy, no "normalcy" in their lives. On one hand, they need endless public adulation and on the other, they resent the constant presence of fans and papparazzi. It tends to warp one's character. It's next to impossible not to become narcissistic, egomaniacal, paranoid, angry None of these tendencies produce nurturing, empathic people, no less parents.
Todd and Sarah Palin. They way they used their kids and the peril she put Trig in when he was just about to be born just so she could attend a political convention.
The reason it's no the top Ten cause a blogger from HP would be on it for abusing his young daughter.

All I know is that taking dozens (hundreds?) of prescription drugs daily, traveling with a quack doctor who can give you a nightly doses of general anesthesia medication, forcing one's children to wear animal masks whenever they went out in public, continuing to sleep with young boys (remember the Martin Bashir interview?), squandering so many multiple millions on STUFF (while stiffing all your creditors) so that one must constantly re-locate makes yours truly want to vomit.
They know because his daughter said so. Unlike you, who are just basing your opinions on what you THINK you know.
What till the "tell all drug use book" comes out in a few years by who else...the daughter!

I know it's not very interesting, but I know a lot of parents who aren't celbrities and who are worse than anyone on this list.
It's a tough competition, but I am appalled not to see Phil Spector's pretty face on the list! They missed so many, IMO. And sorry to point this out, Dan, but if you personally know a lot of parents worse than Ryan ONeil or Joe Jackson, I'd suggest you re-assess the company you keep.

Actually I think Harriet meant that Patty Duke's parents were the bad ones. SHE was the victim.
Patty Duke had and was a terrible parent. Her mother was clinically depressed and her father was an alcoholic that threw her out of the house at the tender age of six. She was adopted by the Ross family, who treated her as a commodity, changing her name and, as she recalls, making her dress up in her famous 'Patty' character from the show in order to gain permission to attend her biological father's funeral--in large part to satisfy the press and public. (She has also accused the Ross family of giving her prescription drugs as young as 13 and sexually abusing her.)
As an adult, she suffered from bipolar disorder (as she always will, however it is now properly treated with lithium and therapy) and had a serious prescription drug habit that, understandably, led to a difficult childhood for her three sons.
Patti Duke had undiagnosed bipolar disorder and had some pretty difficult times which her sons witnessed. Her excuse is that he was ill, but her illness is now under control.
Joe Jackson should NOT be #1. Ryan O'Neal beats any body for this title any day, anytime. Just look at all of his kids. Not one of them has a kind word for him either.
