Rand Paul Joins Kentucky Senate Race

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Rand Paul, the son of 2008 presidential candidate Ron Paul, ended months of speculation Wednesday by saying he will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated next year by fellow Republican Jim Bunning.

The Bowling Green ophthalmologist told The Associated Press he is entering the race and plans to run as a candidate with "outsider" credentials. His father is a GOP congressman from Texas.

Rand Paul had been considering a campaign even before the 77-year-old Bunning announced last week that he intends to retire when his second term ends.

Two other Republicans – Secretary of State Trey Grayson and western Kentucky businessman Bill Johnson – have already announced they're running for Bunning's seat. Two major Democrats, Attorney General Jack Conway and Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, are seeking their party's nomination.

"It's about time we have someone who is an outsider and not a career politician in Washington," Paul said in an AP interview. "Nothing ever seems to change, even when we think we vote for change."

Western Kentucky University political scientist Scott Lasley said Paul can legitimately present himself as "an outsider" candidate, which would be appealing to Kentucky voters.

"To establish himself as a potentially viable candidate, he has to show he has fundraising strength," Lasley said.

Paul spoke to the AP ahead of a national television appearance later Wednesday meant to give him wider exposure and help attract potential donors in Kentucky and out of state for an Internet fundraising drive.

Fundraising, or lack thereof, has already played a key role in the Senate race. Bunning, a sports icon enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, withdrew from his re-election campaign, citing an inability to raise enough money to run successfully. He had been widely considered one of the nation's most vulnerable GOP incumbents, a view that made donors unwilling to give.

Kentucky has trended Republican in recent years, with both of its Senate seats and four of six House seats in GOP hands.

Paul has been sharply critical of both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, saying members of both parties have proven unwilling to do what's necessary to strengthen the country.

"I don't see things in terms of Republican verses Democrat," he said. "I see in terms of issues and whether they're good or bad, and I think that will strike a chord with people."

Paul will have to overcome the fundraising prowess of Grayson, a rising star in the Kentucky GOP, to win the nomination. Even without announcing his candidacy, Grayson reported raising more than $600,000 in the second quarter for an exploratory committee he formed to consider the race.

To be competitive in the primary election, Paul said he likely will need about $2 million.

Borrowing a strategy from his father's Republican presidential campaign, Paul said he plans to lean heavily on Web-based fundraising. His father banked $6 million in one day from an Internet fundraiser.

Paul's single-day fundraiser is scheduled for Aug. 20. He set a goal of $1 million.

"If we get this thing rip-roaring, there are still people who believe we can get there," he said. "I don't know yet. But, if we do, I think we completely transform this race."

"About time we had an outsider" Just like Sarah Palin, huh. You betcha.

You know, sometimes on-the-job training really ISN'T such a great thing. Just ask California how that whole Arnold thing worked out.

What with Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, and now this knucklehead, EXACTLY why do Republicans think that they don't need experience? It is amazing that we wouldn't hire a school bus driver without a driver's license but we'll turn over the keys to our government to just about ANYONE who applies.

There are absolutely no similarities between Palin and Rand Paul. He's a smart guy with solid principles.

I would bet that we will see the same 80-90% re-election rate we always see.

He's going to need alot of luck to beat Conway. Conway almost beat Ann Northrup, a popular republican in kentucky the first time he ran for anything. The republican party doesn't have anyone hear who can beat him.

I am frankly sick of nepotism in politics. The only reason this guy is running is because of his father. Remember what Bush brought to the table?

Ron Paul initially got into the House on the Libertarian ticket. He was running in Central Texas in a predominately white, moderate to low income group just vulnerable enough to the Republican's Southern Strategy yet too weary of the GOP's corporatist connections. Paul exploited this by affirming the racism of his electorate and promising to get big government out of their lives along with a promise to clean out the lobbyists who control our "democracy." After his first term he knuckled under to NRC offers for financial support and thus became owning to the Republican agenda. He then distanced himself from accusations of racism and began to reestablish himself as a Libertarian, now having the strength of an incumbent. He therefor has very strong support among an electorate that does not trust the major parties to be independent of corporatist influence, no matter what they promise regarding their social agendas. The same type of independence and government wariness is endemic in Kentucky but his son will have to raise huge sums of money to pull it off.

So now "getting big government out of your lives" is code word/phrase for racism? Wow, that's a stretch, I think most Americans want big government out of their lives.

No one ever said there had to be an internal relationship between those factors. It does, however, happen to exist in the lower quarters of the Republican Party. The key concept you may be missing is "conservative"; i.e., to maintain the conventions and traditions of the status quo as received generation to generation. Unfortunately, in the South the tradition -- and in many other quarters -- is racism; hence, the Southern Strategy of the Republican Party. Sadly, this also happens to be one of the unspoken draws of Libertarianism in the South.

The only time Ron Paul has run as a Libertarian was for the 1988 Presidential Election. Every other time was as a Republican.

Whatever. Same thing. If he's related to Ron Paul, there is no way in he!! I'll ever vote for him for anything.

His pop is a member of the GOP. That makes him a republican no matter what political philosophy he espouses.
04:39 PM on 08/05/2009
His father is Representative not a Senator.

He's an outsider for many reasons.

He's one of few Republicans who want people to be free to do what they want in their Social lives, such as use drugs if they want. He wants us to come home from Iraq quicker than any Democrat wanted in the last election season.

Michelle Malkin said "Ron Paul really has no business being on stage as a legitimate representative of the Republican Party"

He was excluded from one of the debates, he was invited to the RNC Convention under strict restrictions, such as he couldn't bring anybody with him and wasn't offered to even speak, when all other candidates got to speak.

He has been the single No vote on more bills than all other members of congress added togather, and it's pretty even whether those bills came from Dems or Repugs.

I wouldn't call that as being a well connected person.

Nice, another doctor plans on wasting his medical school education. I'm sure that the people of Kentucky need an eye doctor more than they need another Republican clone in the senate.

you would rather see another lawyer as our politicians? To tell you the truth we need more people in the medical fields, as well as corporate fields, law enforcement fields, small business owners etc.... stop electing lawyers to our congress and start electing people that understand what the rest of us need.

Do you realize that congress is the LEGISLATIVE branch of the government?????

That's all we need is a bunch of people who don't understand the law writing them.
