Stephen Bing, Wealthy Hollywood Producer, Paid For Clinton N Korea Flight (SLIDESHOW)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A wealthy Hollywood producer and a major corporation paid for the flight that carried former President Bill Clinton and two American journalists home from North Korea, prompting a word of thanks Wednesday from former Vice President Al Gore and the freed reporters during an emotional airport reunion.

Stephen Bing, a close Clinton friend and longtime Democratic fundraiser, is the plane's owner, confirmed Marc Foulkrod of Burbank, Calif., chairman of Avjet Corp., the company that manages the aircraft.

Here is a slideshow of Stephen Bing, a wealthy Hollywood producer, close friend of the Clintons and a longtime Democratic fundraiser, with his friends and colleagues. In this photo, producers Steve Bing (L) and Joel Silver attend the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings.

Gore, who runs Current TV, which employs the two journalists, gave a shout-out to Bing during remarks after the plane landed early Wednesday in Burbank.

"To Steve Bing and all the folks who have made the flight possible, we say a word of thanks, deep thanks as well," Gore said.

The journalists themselves offered gratitude to another apparent patron: Dow Chemical Co. and its CEO, Andrew Liveris.

The connection between the chemical company and the Current TV journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, was not readily apparent. Liveris issued a statement that explained that a plane owned by the Midland, Mich.-based company was used "in different parts of the mission in recent days."

The surprise humanitarian mission required swift approvals for diplomatic and flight plan exemptions at the highest levels of the Federal Aviation Administration and State Department, according to Foulkrod. U.S. planes generally are not allowed to fly to North Korea.

Foulkrod said Bing will pick up the bill for the flight. The total has not yet been tallied but will be significant, he said. Fuel alone is likely to cost $100,000 for the 26 hours of flying, he said, and additional costs such as catering and satellite phones could pile another $50,000 to $100,000 onto the price tag.

The effort to set up and clear the flight only started four to five days ago, Foulkrod said, adding that officials in Washington worked on it through the weekend.

Heir to a New York real estate fortune, Bing raised at least $100,000 for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, in addition to giving the maximum $2,300. He also donated at least $10 million to Bill Clinton's presidential library and charitable foundation.

Bing was a multimillion-dollar donor to pro-Democratic groups that ran ads against Republican President George W. Bush in the 2004 campaign. He also donated at least $5 million to pay for a new Democratic National Committee headquarters in 2002, when Clinton loyalist Terry McAuliffe headed the party.

Bing has a stake in the Obama administration's actions on the environment. His Shangri-La Construction builds energy-efficient buildings and aircraft hangars – in line with Obama's goal of cleaning up the environment and creating "green" jobs.

Its parent company, Bing's Shangri-La Industries, LLC., hired a Washington lobbying firm this year and has spent at least $100,000 lobbying Congress and the Defense Department on energy efficiency in buildings and airplane hangars.

Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment also was the conduit for a contribution that provided $40.1 million of the total $45.7 million raised to support a failed 2006 California ballot initiative that sought to tax companies drilling for oil in California.

As a producer, Bing's projects included "Shine A Light," a 2008 Martin Scorsese documentary of a Rolling Stones performance filmed at Bill Clinton's 60th birthday party in New York. He also produced the film "Beowulf" (2007) and financed the film "The Polar Express" (2004).

Bing's love life has periodically drawn as much attention as his political causes. Tabloids had a field day with a dispute over whether Bing fathered a child with British actress Elizabeth Hurley. It ultimately was confirmed that he had.

Bing's spokesman Paul Bloch declined to comment for this story, citing Bing's blanket refusal to speak to the media.

Dow Chemical spent nearly $3 million lobbying in Washington in the first half of this year. Its lobbying reflects its wide-ranging interests: The national health care overhaul, transportation funding, chemical plant security, trade and shareholder rights, taxes and pension funding are among the issues it weighed in on.

Liveris supported Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign last year, and when Romney dropped out of the race, GOP nominee John McCain.

The plane that ferried the journalists and Clinton flew from Burbank to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, then to Misawa Air Base in Japan_ refueling in both places_ and then went on to North Korea, Foulkrod said. On the way back it had enough fuel to skip Elmendorf, flying from Misawa directly to Burbank.

He's the official chronicler (and a contributor to) the Clintons' assumption of executive authority in America.

This is yet another example of the neoliberals using personal rather than public diplomacy to take over the nation's foreign policy as they have its domestic policy.

President Obama risks very much being reduced to a talking-head spokesperson for a fully restored Clinton Presidency, this time with a compliant Democratic Congress all too willing to accomplish the neoliberals' goals.

It's funny but rumours say that North Korea asked for the Clintons to come when the Journalists were arrested near the Chinese border. From day one they wanted a Clinton to come over to do a photo op.

While I am very glad the ladies are back home safe, where would the media stand if this had been a rogue mission by an out of office Republican and funded by a conservative group?

I don't care if it's Clinton, Bush, or anyone else. Independent missions to create policy are wrong.

In this case the outcome was good, and probably pre-arranged. Next time it could blow up in our face.

You know Clinton didn't take off on that plane until this thing was a done deal. There was no way he was going unless thier release was guaranteed. Ling's speech was way overdone - very rehearsed.

"Independent missions to create policy"? I can't decide if that's the silliest thing I've ever read or just the most naive.

alright.. I will play the devil advocate here

Could it be this whole Korea trip thing a part of the deal that the president made with the Clintons after the primary to regain the public image of Bill Clinton and he was placed on this "humanitarian mission" to emphasize his diplomacy and achievements both current and during his presidency?

If so.. then well played and well done everyone: the Clintons and the President

You don't ask the obvious question: did the incursion into North Korea happen accidentally, as claimed, or was it a ploy to set in motion this whole course of events? Everyone in power seems to benefit by the occasion -- the Clintons and Al Gore, the North Koreans, and of course the private financiers of the rescue expedition.

After the Bay of Pigs and the Iraqi debacle, I don't discount any possibility. There have just too many simultaneous incursions by US "journalists" into hostile nations without valid reasons. I mean, I was anxious just setting a foot over the Danish-German border without the correct papers. Yet in the last three months we've had similar events take place in Iran, Pakistan, and North Korea -- all terrific hotspots -- and that's only the people who get caught trespassing. In each case some dignitary gets to become the hero de jour after the same teary-eyed thank you's are broadcast around the world.

Our enemies are the foils of our defenders. They work together to maintain each others' hegemony. Yes, it's good that the women are safe in America. Perhaps their motives were noble even if their methods were risky. But that doesn't change the fact that those who benefit he most are those already in power, on both sides.

Wag the Dog.

As more and more good things come out of this admin.-we are going to see the Republican party get more and more extreme, rac ist, and belligerent in their questioning. Which is fine by me. If they keep their ha te up, by 2012-the only people who will vote for them are skin heads, klan members and birthers.

I have not one doubt in my mind that Mr. Clinton if he could run for President again would win in a landslide. And that is what makes so many Clinton haters foam at the mouth. There are so many of us that hold Bill and Hillary in such high esteem. And the haters hate because they could never touch him on any level that decreased his ability to get things done or personal popularity.Deal with it.

I suppose you won't give Al Gore credit for asking Bill Clinton to PLEASE make the trip to North Korean and negotiate to bring the women home?

Are you even happy these two women are home. Does matter at all that YOU didn't have to pay one dime to bring them home. I guess your mission is to bash Al Gore no matter what?

Are you sure your name isn't Orly Taitz?
