WASHINGTON — Conservative activists are vowing to keep up their fight against President Barack Obama's health care plans, even as the Democratic Party pushes back hard, accusing Republicans of organizing angry mobs.

Democrats and the White House are claiming that the sometimes rowdy protests that have disrupted Democratic lawmakers' meetings and health care events around the country are largely orchestrated from afar by insurers, lobbyists, Republican Party activists and others.

"This mob activity is straight from the playbook of high-level Republican political operatives," the Democratic National Committee says in a new Web video. "They have no plan for moving our country forward, so they've called out the mob."

Some of the activists who've shown up at town hall meetings held recently by Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Wis., and others are affiliated with loosely connected right-leaning groups, including Conservatives for Patients' Rights and Americans for Prosperity, according to officials at those groups. Some of the activists say they came together during the "Tea Party" anti-big-government protests that happened earlier this year, and they've formed small groups and stayed in touch over e-mail, Facebook and in other ways.

But they insist they're part of a ground-level movement that represents real frustration with government spending and growth.

"There isn't any group that's backing me, who's influenced me, who's pushing me to do this," said Robert A. Mitchell, a small business owner from Doylestown, Pa., who questioned Specter at a weekend town hall event about lawmakers failing to read legislation.

The exchange was captured on YouTube and has spread, along with other videos. One showing protesters mobbing Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, includes footage of someone holding a sign showing Doggett with devil's horns; another shows Kagen shouted down at a meeting at a library.

At a forum in Little Rock on Wednesday, Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., sat with his head in his hands at one point while the crowd heckled him and Rep. Vic Snyder, accusing them of supporting government-backed care that would eliminate choice.

Mitchell said he was angered by push-back from the White House and it would motivate him to further activism, a view echoed by others.

"These are town hall meetings, and the federal government is trying to intimidate people," Mitchell said in a phone interview Wednesday.

Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele defended the activism, even as he denied the party was organizing it.

"We are not inciting anyone to go out and destruct anything," Steele told reporters on a conference call. "We're encouraging people to go and visit their congressman or their senator."

"To sit back and say that this is some Republican cabal is a bunch of baloney," Steele said.

Obama referenced the opposition in a fundraising e-mail sent by his political group, Organizing for America, and asked his supporters to attend events to show their support for his health care plans.

"There are those who profit from the status quo or see this debate as a political game, and they will stop at nothing to block reform," the president said. "They are filling the airwaves and the Internet with outrageous falsehoods to scare people into opposing change."

On Thursday Organizing for America sent out targeted e-mails inviting supporters to specific events in their area. "Make sure that the most powerful voices in this debate are those calling for real reform, not angrily clamoring for the status quo," said e-mails asking people to show up Thursday evening for town halls with Maryland Reps. Donna Edwards and Frank Kratovil Jr.

Also Thursday the AFL-CIO announced plans to mobilize labor activists to attend town hall meetings in 50 congressional districts this month to counter the conservative protesters.

The protests have echoes not just of the Tea Parties held around tax day this year, but also of protests during the Florida election recount in 2000 and in the early- to mid-1990s, when Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled the country to promote then-President Bill Clinton's health overhaul plan, which ultimately failed.

There's no doubt government attempts to change health care can incite real anger. In 1989, a pack of screaming senior citizens angry about a planned change to Medicare surrounded the car of then-House Ways and Means Chairman Rep. Dan Rostenkowski of Illinois. They shouted "Liar!" and "Recall!" and hit Rostenkowski's car with picket signs.

Congress subsequently undid the Medicare change.

One thing that's different this time around is the Internet, which allows groups to communicate and mobilize on a large scale.

"We definitely use all the tools at our disposal," said Amy Menefee, director of communications at Americans for Prosperity, which is encouraging its many thousands of members to attend town hall events and is sending buses around the country, making stops for rallies and at some town halls.

Democratic lawmakers insist they won't be cowed. The only way to respond is to try to get out the message about what's really in the health care plans before Congress, they say.

If you are concerned about receiving "real" health care reform in this country, please take the time to watch a video on our current system. The video was created by Oregon physicians who are advocating for the single-payer option. The video is very informative and helped me to gain a better understanding of various aspect of health care, as we know now it.

https://www.madashelldoctorstour.com/Mad_as_Hell_Video.html

These Oregon physicians are in the process of organizing a caravan designed to inform the public about the benefits of the single-payer option. At last count they will be stopping in approximately 23 states, on their way to demonstrate in Washington. They need volunteers and our support. Please spread the word.

Tarp pushed thru congress without an opportunity for anyone to read it. Same with the stimulus bill and cap & trade. It was attempted with the healthcare reform bill, but fortunately, it was delayed. Major legislation with unprecedented deficit increases and nobody had time to understand what they were passing. Is there any wonder that a majority of Americans are skeptical of HR3200 and mad about it being crammed down their throats with very little explanation as to its content. With legislation that has major effects on 1/6 of our economy, don't you think the citizens are deserving a detailed explanation of what is in the bill. I seriously doubt many of the responders to this blog have bothered to try to read the 1,000 page bill. Are we all just overly trusting sheeple??

Now where is that woman that I was having the fight..um discussion with? Several weeks ago I pointed out to her that France was having financial problems with their health system. I gave links but her only was response was...."no it doesn't". She never backed up her claim.

Today the WSJ prints what I already knew. I have a friend who's daughter owns a bar in Paris.

France Fights Universal Care's High Cost
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124958049241511735.html

I just want to be left alone to manage my financial/medical affairs myself. It may seem financial Darwinism but if anyone is to make a decision to ration care, allow it to be me. If at some point I can't afford the latest, greatest, medical miracle, fine. That is kind of what seems a more natural lifestyle to me. No big eye in the halls of government giving me the thumbs up or down.

The problem with stats and numbers is shown in the WSJ article. When you see the expenditure percentage, most EU stats do not include supplemental insurance. "About 90% of the population subscribes to supplemental private health-care plans." Some don't even include the out of pocket co-pay or coinsurance costs.

It took Obama 6 months to pick out a dog yet he wanted a massive healthcare reform bill to be passed in a few weeks? What a tool.

Do you think Obama thought there would be so much opposition to Socialized medicine, or do you think he imagined he could ram it through like his bankrupt the Nation Bill.

Number one in the number of citizens incarcerated?

We ARE number one in some things, I guess. Healthcare sure isn't one of them.

Some of the WHO's outcomes have fuzzy math. That much given number does not mean you get better health care in #10 opposed to #37. The WHO uses 5 index ratings, some seem a natural number but others such as Financial fairness" will skew the outcome.

To set a broken arm in Costa Rica is $750 but in New York it is $3,000 but it doesn't mean you didn't get you broken arm fixed. The "financial fairness" index may give Costa Rica a higher score. "Put more simply, the FF penalizes a country because some households are especially likely to become impoverished from health costs—but it also penalizes a country because some households are especially unlikely to become impoverished from health costs."

Single payer advocates better read the WHO publications.

http://www.who.int/whr/2000/en/whr00_dgmessage_en.pdf

"Within governments, many health ministries focus on the public sector often disregarding the frequently much larger – private finance and provision of care. A growing challenge is for governments to harness the energies of the private and voluntary sectors in achieving better levels of health systems performance, while offsetting the failures of private markets."

The above doesn't exactly say go toward single payer does it?

Rationing care? What does the WHO say?

It implies explicit choice of priorities among interventions, respecting the ethical principle that it may be necessary and efficient to ration services, but that it is inadmissible to exclude whole groups of the population.

Why is it that when I post links to facts, nobody on this site ever has their facts. Not one has tried to refute what the WHO has said about more private health care.

"A growing challenge is for governments to harness the energies of the private and voluntary sectors in achieving better levels of health systems performance, while offsetting the failures of private markets."

They sure as hell can spit out the #37 figure. Even at the expense of not knowing how the how using indexing to come up with the number. They think (very wrongly if you know the WHO methodology) that #37 is a number in relation to health care outcome.

I posed two ideas to my House of Rep person. Sadly they had not even considered them.

I need split the post. I'll put the questions in a reply.

So why aren't these people being arrested and jailed as was Martin Luther King and his followers whose protests were peaceful and non-violent? I see a double standard here. Are these people really protesting health care reform or (on some deeper, more subliminal level) the election of a black president whom they are bent on harassing.

King and his folowers were not afraid the raise their voices to be heard. That's all these concerned citizens are doing.

And Obama is just as white as he is black. But that is not why he is being opposed. He is making very bad policy. You only bring up ra'ce to try and sidetrack the dialog.

These are ANGRY Americans who may have a right to be. Obama is doing what he can to try and convince everyone they are organized right wing MOBS.The DNC is even in campaign mode with ads. Everyone is arguing over the healthcare plan, and the Mobs, as the pot continues to stir, I believe the only major difference between you and the ones going to the town halls to voice their concern is you haven't realized what's going on yet. And that's only logical because you're on Obama's side or so you think. I've gotten a bad feeling about this. Please just step back from the argument and look at everything that is going on. I hope I'm wrong about this, I truly do. Put partisanship aside long enough to just look at things with a fresh set of eyes and ears. While we have all been distracted by the whole left & right arguments, there have been ALOT of major changes going on in the country. Changes that have shifted a lot of power to our government. IF an administration had sinister plans, & I'm not saying they do, but giving them control over every person in the country's healthcare would be all they would need to control ALL aspects of our lives. Just think about it, because if it gets to that point there won't be a right and a left there will just be the government & the people, only the people will no longer be in

Obama is doing exactly what the left is accusing the right of doing..... organizing by releasing memos to his brown shirts at ACORn and other special interest groups.... the media... surf through HP yourselves..... nothing but "activist" bashing....

where was this bashing when ACORN organized bus loads of mobs to the PRIVATE HOMES of bank CEOs who received bonuses...

Please spare us this unfounded demonizing you constantly try to brand as "right wing extremists" who are nothing more than concerned Americans making their concerns heard....

Tampa, Florida - Angry protesters and strong supporters are clashing inside and all around a health care reform town hall meeting in Downtown Tampa. The meeting which was scheduled to begin at 6:00 at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County drew hundreds of people who quickly began to overwhelm staff and event organizers at the front entrance.

Casita50 wrote:
I was there. It was not a "town hall meeting". It was a private event by SEIU to push the agenda and giving it great media coverage under the guise of a public meeting. When the doors to the auditorium finally opened there were about 150 people already filling the 235 seats. If it truly were a public meeting it would have been held in a larger venue. The 85 or so seats open for the public were tokens for show. The rest were filled with SEIU, ACORN, union, and Democratic Party faithful.

Did anyone watch Keith tonight (of course you did)? He and Johnathan Alter were discussing the town hall in Missouri recently, where a white older woman tearfully r@ged that she didn't like the direction HER AMERICA was going, and that she wanted HER AMERICA back.

This is what the Limbaugh's, Becks and Hannity are counting on. They are going to lose their minds listening to this garbage. They don't like THIS AMERICA with Obama as President? They are freed to LEAVE this America!

But you see, that is not what America is. America is not "My way or the highway", America is a country of open discussion. A country where people can make an impact on the way our country is run. How do people do this? By attending townhalls and such. By getting on the air. By having their voice heard. When you have a country that says "If you don't like it, leave." Then you have a one party system, and as our founding fathers knew, political parties are necessary. Otherwise you have a dictatorship.

What I find funny is that there's millions upon millions of cell phones in this country, and not one of them has snapped a picture of a swastika that the democrats keep ranting on about. For that matter, I have yet to see a single photo of a bus transporting these so-called rent-a-mobs to disrupt townhall meetings. Very queer indeed.
Here's a question worth looking into; The Democrats are charging that these protests aren't grass roots and are being organized and paid for by some vaguely defined, nefarious conglomerate if interests including, among others, the insurance companies. Why hasn't the media investigated and asked the insurance companies if this is the case? Wouldn't the MSM be interested in exposing these companies? If they were able to do so, it would be a huge story.
Or is the charge so clearly ridiculous that the media already knows that an investigation would lead them to conclude that these protests are truly grassroots, thus exposing the Dems as doing nothing more than smearing the taxpayer?
The media is clearly protecting them by not asking questions.
