Swine Flu

news.prnewswire.com:

As the U.S. prepares for a possible second wave of H1N1 or swine flu, as well as for the annual scourge of seasonal flu and colds, a new report from Consumer Reports helps households prepare for, prevent, and treat cold and flu symptoms safely and effectively, including recommendations for what to pack in an emergency kit for a flu outbreak. The report is available in the September 2009 issue of Consumer Reports and online at www.ConsumerReportsHealth.org.

I heard a doctor/researcher on npr say that purell works on 90% of colds, bacteria and viruses but not all; he said soap and water, well-scrubbed in all the creases and webs of the hands, works best. Masks are helpful for self-protection when worn in enclosed spaces such as elevators, airplanes, public transportation. When out, use individually-wrapped wipes after shaking hands, grabbing public hand rails, etc.

Calling it swine flu is a misnomer. It's a bioengineered combination of avian, human, and swine viruses, something that would never occur naturally.

Are you suggesting this was an intentional pandemic? I'm not asking this rhetorically, I am interested to know.

It did coincide with President Obama's trip to Mexico.

Hit? Probably not. But it would be clever!

They have more or less stated that the worlds population needs culling.

No shot for me.

Not even more or less. That is exactly what they say, check out Eric Holder's book calling for reduction in the human population by sterilizing people through mass vaccinations.

No shot for me either.

As a person unlucky enough to currently have Type A influenza, (likely H1N1), thanks to my offspring contracting it at a very expensive summer camp, I would include the following in a survival kit for swine flu - cable TV and something to entertain yourslf with for up to one week. Longer if you have multiple children. I have never been so bored in my life.

Our cases, (child, husband, and myself), have been mild to moderate. Tamilflu has likely made the symptoms much less then they could have been, but I'm going nuts in the house - prepare with a game or something else you can disinfect.

We have great neighbors who leave care packages on our porch...I'm sure we'll be doing the same for them in the coming months.

At first, the authorities said the face masks were not effective. Now they are saying they ARE effective. For the life of me (no pun intended), I cannot imagine that the face masks are effective. It would seem to me that they merely trap viruses and bacteria, that manage to get in around the mask, up against your mouth and nose while they are being bathed in the moisure and hot air from your breath, which I would imagine is a perfect breeding ground for viruses and bacteria. Isn't it true that viruses also enter through the eyes--I have not heard many warnings about not touching your hands to your eyes, and of course, the face mask would not protect against hand-to-eye admission. Can someone set me straight about the masks?

Masks might catch a portion of the viruses coming OUT of you and thus help slow the spread. They won't stop viruses in the air entering your body when you breath though unless the mask is air tight (not those paper things) and filters out relatively small particles.

I think people believe the masks will help them avoid getting sick from someone else; thanks for replying.

I heard on the news, the channel escapes me, that if one received the swine flu shot in 1976, then one should have some antibodies circulating which could offer a degree of immunity, or enough to possibly decrease the severity of the flu. When I heard that, it occurred to me that perhaps that could be why younger people seem to be the ones getting this, as those of us say 45 or older probably received the swine flu immunization when Ford ordered it.

I received the swine flu shot in 1976, as an RN who was in Anesthesia training at the time, and the stuff made me feel as though I had the flu for three days, but work we did through it. In fact, my reaction to it made me forego flu shots for years until I caught it in 1993 and nearly died. We later learned that I have a genetic immunity problem which contributed to that, but the new shots do not effect me at all, as they have greatly improved and eliminated many of the things which used to cause reactions.

I intend to get it and the regular flu shot, as well. The worst thing which could happen would be for someone to contract the swine flu and another flu at the same time and permit the swine to mutate or become more virulent.

The worst thing that could happen is for the shots you get to kill you. The shots 76 killed about 30 times more people than the flu did and causes serious medical problems for an even larger proportion.

Purell is effective against viruses and bacteria. However, one must continue to move the stuff and use the action of wiping and rubbing the stuff on to assist in the effectiveness. Do this until the stuff is dry. The friction applied along with the Purell, as it does with soap and water, assists in effectiveness.

And - one must remember to re-apply a hand sanitizer regularly TXFemmom. It only takes one contact, and one finger in one's mucus membranes to potentially pick a new dose of virus from the environment.

Soap & hot water are best, but an alcohol-based sanitizer will do pretty darned well too.

Evidently hand sanitizers are good to kill some cold viruses but not others. The md i heard say this on npr said soap and water, rubbed around on all creases and webs of hands, works the best. Be like lady macbeth for a few months. (when out, individually-wrapped wipes are good after touching public railings, hand grabs in the subway, or shaking hands.) when in crowded spaces i would unapologetically wear a mask for self-protection, including on airplanes, elevators, and public transportation.

Would someone please advise if Purell works on viruses or only bacteria? This has been nagging at me since the stuff came out.

You are right!

The swine flu vaccine could actually increase your risk of death from swine flu by altering (or suppressing) your immune system response. There is zero evidence that even seasonal flu shots offer any meaningful protection for people who take the jabs. Vaccines are the snake oil of modern medicine.

I don't know about that,... I have taken the 'regular' flu vaccination every year since about ~2000. My wife has Asthma and so I get it annually so as to NOT be as likely to get it and give it to her. She (of course) gets the shot.

Neither of us has gotten the flu in a decade or more - despite known exposures over the years. One Christmas - it was me & her taking care of 4 kids, my brother & sister-in-law, my mother-in-law and a family friend. None of them got the shot,... they dropped like flies over the course of 2-3 days. We didn't even get sniffles or aches. My wife works in education, and is constantly exposed to cold, flus and such,...

Anecdotally - I am convinced,...
