The Obama administration intends to announce an ambitious plan on Thursday to overhaul the much-criticized way the nation detains immigration violators, trying to transform it from a patchwork of jail and prison cells to what its new chief called a "truly civil detention system."

While it's natural to get worked up about "illegal aliens", with our southern neighbors in Mexico, it's too bad that people ignore that the U.S created the whole problem back in 1848 when it took half of Mexico's territory for their whites-only homeland, leaving Mexico with a sawed-off country eternally doomed to subsistence agriculture and dependence on the U.S. 160 years later, the population has grown too high for the country to support, so the chickens are coming home to roost. Writing them off as "illegal aliens", when their ancestors might have lived here before our ancestors, is a remnant of the old white supremacy, and it's time we faced up to it. Why not have Congress officially invite the people of Mexico to dissolve their failed govt. and join the U.S. as the "51st state", so that together we can solve our mutual problems? The U.S. gains 760K mi. of territory + 5.8K mi. of coastline, the border will go poof, and we can all work together as U.S. citizens setting a model for the world. Millions of "gringos" will find the coastline attractive, setting up new cities that create new jobs at all levels and raise the GDP. The bigger better seabound U.S. border will be easier to secure against world terrorism and to control the smaller trickle of immigration from overseas. It's a win-win solution. Josie you can condescend to someone else I live in Texas, I'm a native Texan. I'm now a minority in my own state. When I go or my family goes to the emergency room it looks like the Macys Day Parade of Mexicans and South Americans with cuts and bruises.

A few years ago I was struck my an illegal alien who just stole a truck, I barely survived the event, my car was demolished, along with 5 other peoples and there were two near fatal injuries. The perpetrator jumped out and ran off later to be caught by law enforcement two months later. They did not deport him.

Illegal immigration is not just a social issue it has it's fingers in the demise of this countries basic foundations.

These are hard times for the construction industry, I can't compete with unlicensed Mexican contractors, basically labor brokers, who take jobs away from us licensed and insured contractors in California. There's a very easy way to tell who is here legally. There is a national system called e-verify, which checks valid Social Security numbers for employment. And you are not fired if it is a non match. You get time to prove it's a good number. But a lot of politicians and groups are fighting nationwide compliance.
