NEW YORK — Researchers say a small number of young law enforcement officers who participated in the World Trade Center rescue and cleanup operation have developed an immune system cancer.

The numbers are tiny, and experts don't know whether there is any link between the illnesses and toxins released during the disaster.

But doctors who coordinated the study, published Monday in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, said people who worked at the site should continue to have their health monitored.

"What we are trying to get out there is: Be alert," said Dr. Jacqueline M. Moline, director of the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

The researchers looked at 28,252 emergency responders who spent time amid ground zero dust and found eight cases of multiple myeloma.

Those findings were no surprise. Multiple myeloma is the second most common hematological cancer in the U.S. after non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Normally, researchers would expect to find about seven cases in a group as large as the one examined in the study.

However, four of the people who fell ill were under age 45, and multiple myeloma is thought to be more rare among people of that age. Under normal circumstances, researchers would have expected to find only one case of the disease in that age group.

Those four young multiple myeloma patients included one officer who was caught in the dust cloud on 9/11 and then spent months working long hours at the site. Another spent 111 days at the Staten Island landfill where the rubble was sifted. Two others had less exposure, working 12 and 14 days each in the pit and rubble pile.

The study said it is possible the monitoring program was simply more effective at finding the illness among people who wouldn't ordinarily be subjected to intense medical tracking.

Nevertheless, Moline said, "You shouldn't be seeing so many cases of myeloma in younger folks." The median age of diagnosis for that cancer in the general public is 71.

Several groups are studying New Yorkers exposed to toxic dust when the skyscrapers collapsed.

To date, no study, including the one published Monday, has established a link between that dust and cancer, said Lorna Thorpe, a deputy commissioner and epidemiologist at New York City's health department.

The timing of the four cases examined by the team at Mount Sinai also raised questions about whether they are related to their work at ground zero, she said.

Most research on multiple myeloma indicates that it usually takes 10 to 20 years for someone to develop that cancer after an environmental exposure to a carcinogen.

In these cases, the cancers were diagnosed in as little as three to four years after the attacks, suggesting that something else caused the disease.

There is no surprise in the fact that first responders to the WTC on 9/11 and subsequent people who worked there afterwards we contaminated with hazardous materials that cause countless respiratory, physical and neurological problems.

Then Mayor Giuliani refused to acknowledge this and refused to help medically treat those who put their own lives on the line for others.

If this isn't a compelling enough situation for universal health care, I don't know what is.

The number of annual cases of multiple myeloma in the US is 14,600. Taking the US population at 307,137,918, this gives an incidence rate of 1 per 21,027 persons. The 9/11 incidence rate is 8 times the normal rate.
It's easy to fool the public with a casual statement. The truth is always more telling and the officials know it.

Your statement is critical to understanding why this is a misleading article - what's the error in the public measurement? 1 case in 21027 is indeed a lower rate than 8 cases in 21027, but since the error in measuring the general rate is (almost certainly above - a hedge since I confess to not actually knowing the particular rate error) above 7 cases in 21027 (or 3.3*10^-4 spurious incidents), you can't really say anything about the significance of 9/11 type exposure to cancer risk. Throw in the fact that this population has an examination bias (i.e. they are being checked for cancers more aggressively than the general public) and it's difficult to posit even a correlative claim. I'm glad 9/11 responders are being aggressively screened for health complications, but it's important to respond reasonably to claims about the dangers faced by the 9/11 environment.

That day in September 2001 that was the day physics was defied how airplanes hit the tops of buildings made the floors below collapse is still mind boggling! That was a classic implode if i ever saw one if that wasn't planed those buildings hadn't come down any better.

And don't forget Building 7. Sure looked controlled to experts.

The problem is that most people in the world believe in imaginary beings so you can't expect them to think rationally. It also makes it easier for other people to persuade them due to their irrationalities.

A country has a protective force...the army...the army is in place to protect that country and its land and people. (Its tissue and cells, if we liken a country to a body).

Now...for SOME reason...perhaps something that has infiltrated the ranks of the army...(OR SOMEBODY who has infiltrated the ranks of the army)... the army is fighting its OWN people (INSURGENTS)...destroying its OWN land.

Can we not PRO-ACTIVELY WONDER if there may be a spiritual element that we are not examining, due to our having invested so much TIME and MONEY in labelling CANCER as a MEDICAL concern?

Or something else all together...

BUT CAN WE NOT LOOK IN ANOTHER DIRECTION FOR ONCE?

We have become functionally fixed.

Maybe looking at this in another way will help us find a cure..maybe cancer only is here to help us understand something else (sad as that might be)? In the past God used famine and floods and disease to show his anger...we are complex now...maybe too complex to listen...maybe too far from God to even think there might be a connection?

Science. THAT'S where the answers lie.

Go ahead and look at your church, but you're not likely to find anything useful in the real world.

This makes me sick. How can people give selflessly in a situation similar to this if they are going to now pause and think about the sicknesses and lack of help that these heroes are going through? Let's hope nothing like this every happens again.

The fact that Bush's EPA chief said it was "safe" in the days after the attack makes my blood boil. Our government is here to protect us and in this situation, they failed twice. That second one was deliberate and profoundly ev il.

Per the above article: "To date, no study, *including* the one published Monday, has established a link between that dust and cancer, said Lorna Thorpe, a deputy commissioner and epidemiologist at New York City's health department."

Get angry at the terrorists that caused 911. Getting angry at an EPA doctor (who knew there might be people trapped under the rubble) and therefore blaming Bush is silly.

I agree the government failed to protect us by preventing 911. However, there is blame to go around. Per the 911 Commission report, the 911 attacks were planned starting in late 1998/early 1999. The 2001 attacks occurred 8 months after Bush's inauguration. Bush inherited a terrorist plot and a weak CIA. Both Clinton and Bush are accountable!

Ask Richard Clark how serious bushco took the threat as everything was flashing red!

Then ask yourself, who gained by looking the other way.

I was there on the ground when 7 fell. It was a work of art in the industry!

Seven was bad, the entire thing was bad and billions have been made on it.

Follow the $$$$$$$$$ period!

RB is being WAAY too light on both the former governor of New Jersey as well as the then sitting president, who was given a breifing titled, "Osama determined to Attack..." and whose Homeland Security bimbo later described as a "historical" document.

Or is "read" books the past tense rather than the imperative?

While conventional thermite is considered an incendiary, burning hot and fast at steel-melting 4500-degree temperatures, so-called "nano-thermite" or "super-thermite" mixtures can be explosive — as proudly noted in the Los Alamos announcement below (click to enlarge).
According to lead author Niels Harrit, a professor of chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, "These new findings confirm and extend the earlier finding of previously molten, iron-rich microspheres in the World Trade Center dust. They provide strong forensic evidence that the official explanation of the WTC's destruction is wrong. Office fires and jet fuel cannot produce these highly engineered, dangerous particles."

The Open Chemical Physics Journal, part of the Bentham Open family of peer-reviewed journals lauded by several Nobel Laureates, make all its articles available online free of charge. Another Bentham Open journal, The Open Civil Engineering Journal, published an earlier article by some of the same authors, Fourteen Points of Agreement with Official Government Reports on the World Trade Center Destruction

Someday, someone that has not been cleaned up, will tell of the millions they made on the seed of of the greatest heist in history. The U.S. treasury and the lives of hundreds of thousands in the disgusting results that this crime was used to justify!

Those that were involved made millions and billions on this crime. It was the culmination of 50 years of ignoring Eisenhower's warning of the greatest threat to our Nation. The M.I.C. controls the message machine now. What was theory when we were young is science now. PHYOPS is subliminal subduction perfected.

Good thing Cheney/W moved quickly to guarantee no lawsuits could be filed against those who used toxic materials in the WTC construction.
Now bring that "first responder" over here so I can get a campaign photo taken.
