Without manufactured fertilizer, the German inventor of which got the Nobel Prize in Chemistry about 90 years ago, Earth's farmers would not be able to grow enough food for more than about 2 billion people, instead of the almost 7 billion on the planet today.

One could say that technology has enabled the overpopulation of this planet.
