CHASKA, Minn. — Tiger Woods will be fined by the PGA Tour for his public criticism of a rules official after winning the Bridgestone Invitational, a tour official said Monday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the tour does not publicize fines.

Woods was bothered after his four-shot victory Sunday because he and Padraig Harrington were put on the clock at the par-5 16th. He said that caused Harrington to rush three difficult shots, leading to triple bogey.

European Tour chief referee John Paramor told Woods and Harrington they were being timed.

Woods said he told Harrington after it was over, "I'm sorry that John got in the way of a great battle."

Paramor said the final pairing was well behind most of the back nine, but officials gave them time to catch up. They were still 17 minutes out of position on the 16th tee, when they were put on the clock.

Woods hooked his tee shot, punched out to 178 yards and hit an 8-iron that stopped a foot from the hole for birdie. From the right trees, Harrington hit a 5-iron to the edge of a bunker, went over the green, then hit a flop shot too hard and into the water. The four-shot swing took the drama from one of the most compelling final rounds of the year.

"I don't think that Paddy would have hit the pitch shot that way if he was able to take his time, look at it, analyze it," Woods said. "But he was on the clock, had to get up there quickly and hit it."

Harrington conceded he was rushed, although he said it would be unfair to give the final group preferential treatment.

Section VI-D in the PGA Tour's player handbook says, "It is an obligation of membership to refrain from comments to the news media that unreasonably attack or disparage tournaments, sponsors, fellow members, players, or PGA Tour."

I do not know that there is a "shut-up" rule in golf!

The word from Woods this afternoon is that he will not be fined by the PGA Tour. He said he has heard from Tim Finchem, and there will be no fine for his comments.

Harrington hit a bad shot. If the ball did not go into the water - this is a non-event. Tiger being modest blamed it on the official instead. Tiger should have said -- "I turned the heat up - Harrington choked!"

There's no Criticizing in Golf!

The idea of the clock is to speed up play and not to hold up people behind. They were the last group. Stupid officials and stupid sponsers.

If Tiger wants to get back at them all he has to do is sit out a few events...maybe the PGA? They hate it when he doesn't show up.

He won't let the fans down...
He's a good man. He'll do as he needs to do, and play golf.

This was a totally legitimate criticism by Tiger. He wasn't crying sour grapes. If they fine him, he'll be okay.

Going to send CBS and PGA an email similar to this:

To Whom it may concern,

I watched the Goodrich WGC golf tournament on your network to see the sports competition. And because I was so entertained by the sporting event, I felt an allegience to support those companies that had advertised on your network at the time of the sporting event.

By first hurrying Padrig Harrington during the sporting event, then by compounding the issue by fining Tiger Woods for speaking out on the result of your initial mistake is apauling to me. Both you and the PGA tour have put your own financial interests far and above those of Mr. Woods and Mr. Harringtons. Your actions should be similarly construed as cheating and referre tampering. In my opinion your organizations actions are no different than those of Tim Donagey's basketball tampering shinanigans. Only you sold out to your corporate sponsors instead.

I am going to watch the PGA Championship this weekend only to not all of the advertisers during the two final rounds of coverage on your network. I will then send them a similar email expressing my intent NOT to support their products for six full months after the PGA tournament in order to protest your networs actions.

If you can screw around with the tournament itself, then fine a competitor for acknowledging that you screwed around with the tournament, then I have the right to boycott and company that will financially enable you to continue!

Maybe, but sometimes you've got to speak up. That's not the way a tournament should be run.

That may have been the classiest thing I've seen in an otherwise totally bland world of post-game professional golf. Tiger won - he did not have to criticize being put on the clock. He was questioning the application of a rule that resulted (perhaps unfairly) in adversely affecting the play of his competitor and friend. Very classy indeed and it was worth every penny! Way to go Tiger!

Tiger loves a battle. He was in a good one. The officials screwed it up. Tiger won, but he doesn't like, or need to win that way.

It would be like giving an opponent of Achilles a dull sword and a faulty shield.

(Sorry. Just saw Troy)

Well Tiger just said...
"there is no fine." per the PGA to Tiger.

Then he said...
"It was a great battle, but I guess we had to finish by 6:00PM and we finished at 6:03...
The outside forces are more important I guess."

I guess there will be a fine now!

You go Tiger!!!

The PGA is hoping and praying that Tiger do not turn around and fine them.

I agree with Tiger about the clock.

Tiger had his rebuke...but people are naive if they don't think that BOTH Tiger and the PGA have worked this out where Tiger gets fined (so they say....who knows) to also show the PGA's rebuke to make it even.

The rules will be bend in the future....so all is well.
