The Brooklyn Urban Beekeeper Outlaws (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 09/11/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:50 PM ET

Beekeeping, despite the plethora of environmental benefits, is illegal in New York City. Plenty of great organizations, like Just Food, are working to overturn the ban. In the meantime, city beekeepers are staying stealthy and undercover. Check out these urban beekeepers in an undisclosed Brooklyn location.

Rightwingmarine, I hope you are yanking our chain about your fear of bees. Yes, it's your fault if you get stung. Bees don't go around chasing people trying to sting them, it's against their best interest--they die after they sting. If you've ever eaten a fruit or vegetable, thank (or blame) a bee!

if your dog gets out and bites someone you are liable for that. These three have 250,000 bees, are they prepared to pay for the care of an innocent person that gets stung as well as the penalty for violating NYC law?

Kinda hard to trace whose bee did it. Its not like they have little collars with bells on them or microchips. Besides, it takes a lot of flailing and swatting to get a bee to sting you. I was stung for the first time in my entire life when I was 48 and that was because I grabbed a board and did not realize there was a bee on the other side of it.

so your response is that it's ok to let your pet roam free in a crowded city and if it harms someone that's ok too so long as the victim can't trace the pet back to you? Most domesticated dogs won't bite unless they are antagonized, but that won't be an issue if the owner keeps control of their dog. No one is controlling these bees.

Just dumb.
Go back to your cage.

Keep it up, you are creating a much more sustainable future with your efforts. And thanks for pollinating beautiful Brooklyn.

Good for them!

Gotta love these guys but safety first ~ for themselves and their neighbors.

Loss of pollinating bees is a real problem. My husband has been using a q-tip to manually pollinate our veggies. Last year we wound up with orange cucumbers after he inadvertently dabbed some pumpkin pollen in the wrong flower. The bees know best!

Damn bee H8ters, but I sorta understand why, in a borough of over a million closely packed people, quite a few residents are going to be deathly allergic to bee stings.

European honeybees are not aggressive - leave them alone and they'll leave you alone.

so if someone gets stung it's their own fault? I believe we call that blaming the victim.
