WASHINGTON — The State Department struggled Tuesday to explain Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's face-off with a Congolese student and suggested that the questioner's nervousness sparked the outburst with the mention of her husband's name.

Clinton snapped at the university student in Kinshasa on Monday when he asked what her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and Congo native and former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo thought about an international financial matter. Mutombo was appearing with her at the university.

"Wait. You want me to tell you what my husband thinks?" Clinton asked in response. "My husband is not the secretary of state; I am. So you ask my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I'm not going to be channeling my husband."

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Tuesday that Clinton reacted that way because of the question.

"As the question was posed to her, it was posed in a way that said, 'I want to get the views of two men, but not you, the secretary of state,'" Crowley said.

The French-speaking student later said he had meant to say President Barack Obama, according to U.S. officials traveling with Clinton. It was unclear whether that meant he misspoke or the translator erred.

"Perhaps he was nervous," Crowley said.

Asked if Clinton had any regrets about losing her cool, Crowley tried to deflect the question, saying she was not available to get her thoughts. At the time, Clinton was en route between stops during her 10-day tour in Africa, and she did not address the outburst to reporters traveling with her in the Congo.

Clinton's trip was overshadowed at the start by her husband's secret diplomatic mission to North Korea, where President Kim Il-Jung turned over two U.S. journalists who had been held after straying across the border.

Nothing to explain. If Palin could mouth off daily...Hillary gets to put people in their place on occasion. I'm surprised we haven't heard about any more outbursts before now!

He has done that already, quite a few times. Contrary to HRC, it goes through well, being gracious, to the point and on subject.
HRC brought out her irritation, and added gender politics to the issue. Now the state dept is embarrassed.

With all the challenges in the world, and the always difficult tasks of conducting effective diplomacy, the State Department now has the challenge of managing the Clinton melodrama on the world stage.

Has a Secretary of State ever behaved so undiplomatically, venting persoal marrital frustration while on an offficial visit to another nation in front of the world media at a public forum?

Can her colleagues at the State Department send Hillary to Diplomatic "boot camp" before she travels again? Or do they simply have to learn to manage the increasing fallout from the Clinton soap opera and the "shoot from the hip Rove-style politician" "all about me" "eternal victim" who is now our nation's top diplomat.

Bravo Hillary. The Secretary of State's response was dead on. The student is jerk for asking such a question. The problem isn't with Hillary's response it's with the media's reaction. When Hillary Clinton or President Obama shoot from the hip they are portrayed as ill informed nincompoops. When Dick Cheney shot from the hip you got a face full of buckshot. Talk about double standards.

Chauvinism ("jerk"), but perpetrated by women upon men. How do we call that?

Perhaps was she "dead on", but now the State Dept is "dead on" embarrassed.

"The student is jerk for asking such a question". He did not ask that question in the first place. It was mistranslated. The student meant "the president" (Obama, and he tried to approach HRC to ask the correct question again), not her husband. You get a deer in the headlight, and you call him a jerk??

FYI...The student was referring to POTUS (Obama) not Bill Clinton. It was reported that the translater made the incorrect interpretation.

Am I seriously suppose to believe that no one in the Bush administration ever got testy when asked a question that they didnt care for. Then again maybe they were not asked a question they didnt cared for goodness knows our media during the Bush years was incapable of asking tough questions or questions that Bush didnt care for.

Harping on this is silly becasue they have been SOS and Presidents who have gotten testy. I even remembered Bill Clinton use to get visibly angry when asked a question he didnt like.

What does it only matter cause its a woman. Goodness sometimes we need to LET these things go and stop focusing on silly nonsense.

You say it like it is Hillary, good for you. Stupid stupid question. You are your own woman and had better be respected for it. Our Sec. of State is attempting to bring attention to the rape and murder of women and children in Africa and I think she's sick of seeing the toxic anti-women status in so many of the countries she visits.

in my own ways, i love Bill & Hill, however, i never felt
comfortable with the inevitability of their soap opera
taking up air time on the global/political stage.

it's why i was against her being president, and why
i felt uneasy about her accepting (or wrestling) the
SOS position.

she should have stayed in the senate and plodded along
where she had begun to make a name for HERSELF, out
from behind Bubba's shadow.

i understand the outburst, but do not excuse it.
obviously, she's rightfully exhausted and p.o.ed.
but she did make her own bed.

"pure dribble" too?

I don't believe for one minute the interpreter got the question wrong. Yes, the question was out of line, but not so bad it deserved her rant. Even if it did, we should hold our top diplomat to a higher standard. Basically she lost her cool and needs to find ways to maintain her composure if similar things arise in the future....because they will.

I'm still waiting to find out what Hillary said that was considered an "outburst".

Oh c'mon...this is the same drama they hyped about her during her campaign.
Remember that one particular moment when she got emotional for a whole 3 seconds?
The talking-heads went wild.
But all the other male candidates get brushed off as "proper displays of emotion".
How come when you're a woman-in-power...you have to sit like a robot?
And then when you do....the talking-heads say..."Oh no...she's cold!"
Is there ANY reaction a woman can have that is acceptable by the MSM?????

it was actually a young, nervous student participating in what was meant to model a democratic forum, which makes it even worse. Hillary smacked him a good one. shame.

She was in her right to make that statement. It was a little harsh and I think he may have made a mistake. I'm not sure what he said verbatim but if he said President Clinton then its probably a mistake as he may have been nervous. People need to understand that she needs to be addressed directly. She is right to set the tone to seperate her from her husband. Bravo Hillary!

What's the big deal? Can't say as I blame her. Secretary Clinton was in the middle of a interesting diplomatic mission of her own, and she was probably ticked that her husband was all the media wanted to talk about.

Ya know, the MSM didn't once critisize anything the bush administration did for eight years, but they are all over the Obama Administration for everything, real or imagined!

Hillary injected the eternal Clinton soap opera into an official appearence as Secretary of State. You would rather have coverage of her pantsuit. There is no real substance to cover.

So all you folks who think she is so great..... She is our country's senior diplomat. She is supposed to keep her cool regardless of the situation at hand. That's why we have diplomats and hopefully diplomacy.
Her display of temper (both vocally and with her body language) towards this poor fellow is most unprofessional.

You're obviously not a negotiator nor a diplomat. Even if you're a sales person you would know that sometimes a strong stance is required to set the tone. No way should she have backed down. She was left with no choice but to state the obvious. Now get a grip!
