I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Workers at One World Trade Center have set a 70-ton piece of steel into place, making it the largest column installed yet at the tragic construction site.

The column is one of four supposed to go up this week, with a total of 24 planned to be in place by the fall.

Each of the roughly 60-foot long columns was made in Luxembourg and will help make the Freedom Tower, as One World Trade Center is also known, rise 1,776 feet in the air.

Hey it's only been two and a half years since ground breaking !! At this rate it will be finished by ........

On January 22, 1930 they started excavation of the site of what was to be t the Empire State Building thought the construction officially started on March 17 1930. The building was opened on May 1, 1931. What does this say about the sad state of both New York State and the country today as a whole.

5 workers did die during the rushed construction.

Additionally, because of the great depression both labor and materials were easily accessible and cheap.

You can thank the Chinese for the name change to One World Trade Center. In part.

"Freedom Tower" didn't work for what's to be the building's first tenants, though the Port Authority downplayed the quid pro quo.

How fast could thermite cut through that steel?

While conventional thermite is considered an incendiary, burning hot and fast at steel-melting 4500-degree temperatures, so-called "nano-thermite" or "super-thermite" mixtures can be explosive — as proudly noted in the Los Alamos announcement below (click to enlarge).
According to lead author Niels Harrit, a professor of chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, "These new findings confirm and extend the earlier finding of previously molten, iron-rich microspheres in the World Trade Center dust. They provide strong forensic evidence that the official explanation of the WTC's destruction is wrong. Office fires and jet fuel cannot produce these highly engineered, dangerous particles."

I think the men and women working at Ground Zero are doing a wonderful job - they should be commended. However it is very much being held in red tape and bureaucracy - and from what I understand, the victims wanted a memorial garden, a place of peace and sanctuary to remember.

I was at Ground Zero in March 2008 - it was a humbling experience I can tell you - and it saddens me that in a year and a half this is the only major construction move made. In eight years, this is not good and to me, only shows a disregard by bureaucrats for the emotive place this holds int he hearts of Americans and those of us outside who care.

How many women are working there? Have some numbers? Just curious.

Rough guess 3,000? Not all at once.

This column is far from the only work done since March 2008.

There has been extensive work done below grade, including the framework for what will be the eventual memorial's waterfalls at the twin towers' footprints.

My apologies on that account then. Like I say, the men and women working there are doing a good job - as I already said, and I am aware there is a lot of structural underground work to do within the footprint of the site, but you have to concede that above ground, red tape has caused a slowness to the work.

A true National Embarrassment. Construction should have been done by the time Bush was done.

Sure if we wanted to lean like one does in Italy but we didnt. Unlike our politicals views in America a left or right leaning building would not have been helpful at 1776 feet tall.

hmm.... You would think in a recession that people would try to boost American industry by having American steel Columns used.

Or is Luxembourg somewhere in the Iron range?.... I am not very patriotic at the moment-- but the economy is in a hole and we need to help get it out of there. And speaking of Hole-- why is the memorial planned for The WTC two waterfalls that cascade into a hole in the ground? I cant think of something more depressing than water that flows into an abyss in the foundations of the buildings foot prints....

Steel is and has been for the last 50 years an international commodity. The original WTC used steel from the US, Britain and Japan. The majority of the exterior columns of the twin towers were fabricated by Pacific Car and Foundry in Seattle, using steel from Japan. That one contract made up 1/5th of the entire steel used in the project. Nothing new.
