Michele Bachmann's Son Joins "Re-Education Camp"

The Star Tribune confirms what the blog Dump Bachmann has been reporting for weeks: Rep. Michele Bachmann's son Harrison has joined Teach For America, part of what the Minnesota Republican considers a dreaded government re-education camp program called AmeriCorps.

Back in April, Rep. Bachmann warned of the expansion of the program, designed to get young people involved in community service:

I believe when it's all said and done, this service that -- I believe that there's a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums. It's very concerning. It appears that there's a philosophical agenda behind all of this, and especially if young people are mandated to go into this.

She added, "As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this."

Star Tribune columnist Jon Tevlin writes that "when Bachmann issued her screed, her son might have already been accepted, and certainly would have applied. Ouch."

Take Bachman's description. Substitute the word "church" for "government". What you now have is a description of church attendance, church camps, and church mission trips for children and adolescents.

Only I was physically punished for questioning the dogma I was force-fed, and my attendance was anything but voluntary!!

Uh, WOW, so not only are conservatives opposed to any kind of governmental social programs but now they're against people taking part in such programs of their own free will or even doing community service?

A personal note: my brother worked for Americorps for three years. He went from being a shiftless college dropout to a dedicated regional assistant coordinator helping victims of Hurricane Katrina with gutting and reconstruction projects, as well as managing the huge influx of volunteer campers who travelled from across the country thanks to the program. Americorps not only changed his life in a positive way, but has helped change the lives of countless volunteers, residents of New Orleans and beyond.

I urge Ms. Bachmann to actually visit and talk with these great selfless people and programs, whose actions speak volumes over her callous, off-hand generalizations. Saint Bernard's Parish, we are still with you!

This would be the the single most effective reason for a crusade on unwanted pregnancy.
Teens everywhere would be enlightened about using birth control, or abstinence, important
as a need for avoiding pregnancy and the resulting undesirable offspring in many situations.
