The instigator was the US Republican party, a big show, so that John McCain could stand up and shout all over the place that he was Georgian and be tough against the old cold war enemy Russia. The US sucked the EU into supporting Georgia without investigating and as such demonstrated gross incompetence especially as the underlying risk was global thermonuclear war. The whole thing was nothing more than an obscene political show. Russia had sanctioned peace keepers there, which Georgia intentionally attacked and murdered, what would have been the US's response in similar circumstance, there is no way that anybody would not have expected Russia to counter attack, seek justice for the murdered peacekeepers and of course win. The one and only thing that could possibly have prompted Georgia to attack Russia was empty assurances from the US republican party that the US military would come to their aid but the US republicans wanted Georgia to lose, wanted the show and wanted the opportunity to pump up the image of John McCain. How quickly everyone forgot, Sarah 'I can see Russia from my house' Palin, Russia still is big in the arms Industry dominated republican party.

I think it is bigger than that, somehow the U.S. ordered Georgia to strike under the cover of the Olympics for a bigger outcome. The U.S. knew Russia would respond but just a few days later Sec. Rice was in Poland to sign (blackmail) the ABM Treaty...

Nice timing right? Larger strategic interests of the U.S. may have been at stake in Georgia...

Georgia was the instigator,

Repression was the game.

Georgia was the culprit on this one. They attacked almost immediately after renewing a cease fire agreement, and their timing was also intended to hide the attacks burried in a big U.S. news day. Russia did respond a bit more forcefully than necessary, and perhaps tarried there too long after Georgia withdrew.

Georgia needs to let Abkazia vote on autonomy - but that won't happen.

Ofcourse, when the West commits crimes it is always excused and ignored but if Russia does one the U.S. will cite international laws, UN Charter, etc...

Georgia started the war and should be held accountable period!
