Palin, Grassley Double Down On "Death Panels"

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 9/13/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Palin Exit

Two prominent Republicans who have encouraged an unfounded rumor about Democratic health reform plans have doubled down on the myth.

Former Alaska GOP Gov. Sarah Palin defended her claim that the Democratic health care proposal would create "death panels" and attacked President Obama in a long statement Wednesday night.

Yesterday President Obama responded to my statement that Democratic health care proposals would lead to rationed care; that the sick, the elderly, and the disabled would suffer the most under such rationing; and that under such a system these "unproductive" members of society could face the prospect of government bureaucrats determining whether they deserve health care. [...]

My original comments concerned statements made by Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a health policy advisor to President Obama and the brother of the President's chief of staff. Dr. Emanuel has written that some medical services should not be guaranteed to those "who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens....An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia." [10] Dr. Emanuel has also advocated basing medical decisions on a system which "produces a priority curve on which individuals aged between roughly 15 and 40 years get the most chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get chances that are attenuated." [...]

President Obama can try to gloss over the effects of government authorized end-of-life consultations, but the views of one of his top health care advisors are clear enough. It's all just more evidence that the Democratic legislative proposals will lead to health care rationing, and more evidence that the top-down plans of government bureaucrats will never result in real health care reform.

The full harangue, complete with footnotes, can be found here.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) isn't ready to back down either; he released a statement saying he could not defend the end-of-life care provisions in a House of Representatives' health care bill.

"The bill passed by the House committees is so poorly cobbled together that it will have all kinds of unintended consequences, including making taxpayers fund health care subsidies for illegal immigrants. On the end-of-life issue, there's a big difference between a simple educational campaign, as some advocates want, and the way the House committee-passed bill pays physicians to advise patients about end of life care and rates physician quality of care based on the creation of and adherence to orders for end-of-life care, while at the same time creating a government-run program that is likely to lead to the rationing of care for everyone. On the Finance Committee, we are working very hard to avoid unintended consequences by methodically working through the complexities of all of these issues and policy options. That methodical approach continues. We dropped end-of-life provisions from consideration entirely because of the way they could be misinterpreted and implemented incorrectly. Maybe others can defend a bill like the Pelosi bill that leaves major issues open to interpretation, but I can't."

Why are you still covering every inane utterance from this failed governor--let FOX cover her drivel. It adds nothing to the discussion in this mostly smart forum.
06:00 PM on 08/14/2009
Because the left keeps obsessing about her. They like to have a punching bag more than they want her shut out.

Mz. Palin kept her yap shut while basking in FREE Gov. Insurance (one of many Socialized programs her state of Alaska accept) for her family, Trigs prenatal care, birth and followup. NOT one peep of complaint about it. You're a Fraud Lady!!!
12:35 PM on 08/14/2009
Actually I thought she said to that ... thanks but no thanks ... NOT

75 republicans in congress stated that they were willing to use any health care bill they pass, and not a single democrat.
11:41 AM on 08/14/2009
Sarh Palin, go to H@ll. Please go back to Alaska and stay there. Please don't say anything to anyone anymore. Your imput is not needed or wanted. I am embarrassed for you. Todd is probably embarrassed for you. McCain is embarrassed for you. Try to understand what I say. You are a very, very stupid and destructive woman who never had a fighting chance. You're a big BIG loser, but that's an understatement. You parade your insufferable demagoguery and ignorance as though those were good qualitties to have.

You lost Sarah. Many, many times over. Give it up already!

Palin using her son's disability to attack health care reform is appalling. She exhibited reckless behavior during her pregnancy. The fact that she was not even showing for the first 7 months tells me that she was not behaving like a normal pregnant woman would, ensuring that her developing child received the nutrition he needed to grow properly. She decided to fly all the way back to Alaska while in labor for her fifth-an underdeveloped one at that. I believe that she did all she could to encourage "god's will" to rescue her from the burden of having to raise a child with a disability, and apparently god had other plans.

Casearf,

Your vile unreasoning hatred for this woman obviously knows no bounds. Do you even realize how hateful you sound. And the accusations you make based merely upon your disagreement with her politically makes you seem much worse than those you criticize.

Is it too much to ask for a post that addresses facts and not vicious personal attacks.

I thought liberals were supposed to be tolerant, open-minded and compassionate. Man was I ever wrong about that.
06:13 PM on 08/14/2009
Indeed. That post was mild by HP standards. And we are supposed to think they are compassionate about health care.

I don't hate Palin, but I despise her hypocrisy. She did not behave like a responsible mother to be during that pregnancy, and now she is using that child as a political tool. That's sick.
11:53 AM on 08/14/2009
caesarf,

Palin is of low intelligence and has no ethics, is spiteful, divisive, sarcastic, a liar and a coward. Her sweeping failure in politics can be extended to her position as a mother. She allowed Bristol and Levi to have unprotected sex under her nose resulting ih her daughter having a child out of wedlock. And you are correct, she did fly all the way back to Alaska when she was in labor. Does that really surprise you? Has she ever done anything smart that you know of? Maybe I should re-phrase that. Has she ever done anything, that you know of, that wasn't stupid? No. I don't think so.
06:15 PM on 08/14/2009
I could easily ask the same about Obama, and he is in a position to act on his foolish ideas.
09:58 AM on 08/14/2009
the GOP has found the dumbest woman on earth
11:57 AM on 08/14/2009
She is, by far, the stupidist woman.
06:16 PM on 08/14/2009
Then they obviously havn't looked here.
09:41 AM on 08/14/2009
Why do we continue to see this woman's face? What relevance does she have other than a circus mentality. Please stop reporting on her...she is a non-issue.
09:43 AM on 08/14/2009
Then stop making her an issue. You secretly love her, don't you?

Wonder why you keep given Palin press. It is obvious that is what she and her book publishers want. I thought once the presidential campaign was over I would not have to deal the vitriol polarization that she represents.
09:19 AM on 08/14/2009
Obama is the polarizing factor. Why do you trust those who take your money over those who provide it?
09:51 AM on 08/14/2009
Hate to break it to you, but the government provides the money too. Without government backing it would just be a piece of paper.
12:50 PM on 08/14/2009
I don't get you logic... "those who take your money" ... the question is to do what with it? Build schools? pay people who are unemployed? pay social security? build roads? provide health insurance for elderly and people who can afford it? build airports, damns? Protect us from foreign attacks? ... What are you complaining about? If you want to have all these services then you have to pay for it!!! It is THAT simple. It is absolutely astounding to me how some people don't see the relationships or take things for granted. If you live in any country, there is a government that is supposed to take care of infra structure and provide services that are necessary. And as a member of the society you pay for it. So all the GOP people who think they shouldn't be paying taxes .. that is TOTAL non-sense (unless they stop using "our" roads, schools, hospitals, airports, post offices, DMV, etc. etc.)
12:01 PM on 08/14/2009
Ramsis,

I was ecstatic when she lost in 2008. I couldn't wait to see her fly back to Alaska. I was happy and relieved. This episode is the most outlandish of which I have known. I don't get it.

To the powers that be: please find a scandal, something so she could be put away for a few years. We desperately need the break.
