Lynndie England DC Lecture Canceled After Threats

Lyyndie England

WASHINGTON — A lecture by the woman who became the public face of the Abu Ghraib scandal was canceled Friday at the Library of Congress after threats caused concerns about staff safety.

Former Army reservist Lynndie England had been scheduled to discuss her biography as part of a veterans forum on Capitol Hill. The book by author Gary S. Winkler is called "Tortured: Lynndie England, Abu Ghraib and the Photographs That Shocked the World."

Members of the Library of Congress Professional Association, the employee group holding the talk, received an e-mail from president Angela Kinney saying the event was canceled due to staff safety concerns. A spokeswoman for the library said Kinney would not comment further.

The group had received "numerous expressions of protest" about the lecture from its members, the e-mail said.

David Moore, a Vietnam War veteran and German acquisitions specialist at the library who organized the event, said he had received several e-mails threatening violence and that he shared them with police and the library's inspector general.

He said he was disappointed by the cancellation but supports the decision because of safety concerns. "We can't have an event here that's going to develop into a brawl like a town hall meeting," he said.

He added, "Free speech in America is pretty well dead."

He blamed an essay decrying the event on the Small Wars Journal blog for stirring up much of the opposition. The site focuses on war politics and strategy.

"It's a disgrace that the dishonorable profit and that we use government property and resources to glorify the gutless. If you attend the lecture on Friday, don't save me a seat," reads the posting by Morris Davis, another Library of Congress employee.

Davis, who retired from the Air Force after serving as chief prosecutor for military trials at Guantanamo Bay, didn't immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment. He resigned from his Army legal post in protest because he believed waterboarding was torture.

The posting had 19 comments by Friday afternoon, including several criticizing England.

Other efforts to promote the book had been disrupted, Winkler said in an e-mail, though he didn't elaborate. He defended the biography as balanced, saying it includes voices besides England's to tell the full story of the events and people involved at Abu Ghraib.

Moore said he won't plan future lectures because of the England problems and that he's canceling three already scheduled, including ones by a woman who wrote about sexual harassment in the military and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq. As a counterpoint to England's talk, Moore had also planned a later event with the prosecutor who handled England's case and who has a book due out next year.

"I'm just fed up," he said.

He has organized the library group's veterans forums for eight years, and he said the talks generally draw 40 to 80 people and some have been carried on C-SPAN.

England, now 26, has said she hopes the book will improve her image and help people understand what she says was a limited role in what happened at the Iraqi prison in 2004. A spokeswoman said England may comment on the cancellation later Friday.

She is currently appealing her convictions for conspiracy, mistreating detainees and committing an indecent act. England was one of 11 soldiers found guilty of wrongdoing at Abu Ghraib.

I would never want to hear her speak anywhere. She has done enough damage. It is time for her to disappear out of the public eye for good. Go and live your live because you will never get any sympathy from the public.

The solution is very simple. England was "just following orders." If her superiors did not want her to torture, call it what you will, she would not have done it.

What did Harry S. Truman say, "The buck stops here."

The military has a chain of command. What you do is start with England, and go up the chain of command and prosecute all those people complicit in the torture of prisoners.

But, of course, that will never happen. The U.S. always has a two-faced policy. "Do as I say, don't do as I do."

No hope for the U.S. The American people are fed a line day in & day out by establishment media who never focus continually on problems. They just rely on press handouts, sound bites, and nonsensical photo ops of some jerk waving, smiling, laughing at cameras. Pathetic.

England was a US Army MP. (not much of one, but according to the Army, she was)

US Army MP's are (were?) specifically taught to disobey unlawful orders.

The example we were given was that if a senior officer orders you to shoot someone, you refuse to comply unless that act is justified absent that order. A US Army MP is not likely to be prosecuted for refusing to obey an unlawful order.

England has no excuse for her behavior. She isn't a scape goat, she is a criminal. As were the other so called MP's who followed illegal orders to torture people, regardless who gave those orders.

It is a well known, public fact that George Bush ordered his subordinates to torture people. There is nothing to investigate. There is no coverup. What there is is an administration that is refusing to prosecute the criminals from the prior administration.

Same as any third world dictatorship and why we have international courts. They (allegedly) bring international criminals to trial when their own nation refuses to do so.

Bush and his administration are prime candidate to be tried at the Hague for their numerous war crimes.

But in no case is England a victim of anything than her own criminal behavior.

Good post, but ignores one fact: If a service member ever refuses an order, they are in big, big trouble. Even if they are right.

11 time zones away from home, guys from god-only-knows what covert agencies breathing down your neck, the superior officers ordering you to obey the civilians-it's easy to think that if you don't go along you are going to end up in the desert with a bullet in your head.

Further, there is the concept of "making your bones". Once the CIA, or whatever, has you on film or tape doing something wrong you're screwed. If you defy them, they can go after you, and they can hurt you worse than you can hurt them. Especially if you know that the White House is on their side.

I agree that England committed crimes that can't be overlooked, but the last time I looked there were several ranks between Corporal and One-Star General-where are the prosecutions of those guys?

Why not let her lecture? I would like to understand what made her think that the things she did were acceptable behavior for a U.S. soldier. I would like to know what was going through her mind as she committed these heinous acts. How can we prevent our military personnel from doing these things again in the future if we don't understand their mindset? We should try to understand the values and beliefs that allowed these soldiers to feel what they did was OK at the time, then take that knowledge and train our military personnel so that this does not happen again.

I agree-let her speak, and just hope the moderators have the guts to let the audience rip her a new one in the Q&A session afterward.

Real Americanism is supporting the free speech rights of those who make you want to rip off their heads and spit down their necks.

I feel for the kid. She was scape goaded by the Bush Administration for all the sins of Abu Ghraib when the stink emanated out of the twisted minds of the top officials who authorized such war crimes.

It's true that lost of other folks were also guilty, but none of that means that England's innocent.

she has a right to discuss her experiences with people that want to listen, without fear of harm. 35% of this country is just nuts.

So she can prove that she is way to dumb to have done this on her own, and that there are people in the chain of command who go unpunished.

I understand your point though, Clare-she makes many people sick.

She's a disgrace. She needs to live in a closet for the rest of her life.

I never felt it was right that the really higher-ups never paid for what happened at Abu Ghrab, but Ms. England sure looked like she enjoyed her "work" a little too much. She got what she deserved. What a shameful chapter in our history.

I watched part of an interview she did, she is truly one of the most ignorant people I have ever seen. It was painful to watch. She does herself no favors by speaking out. I dont doubt she was used as a scapegoat, but she did the deeds, so she bears part of the responsibiltiy.

Did her time.

She might try to fade into the background and change her identity. There are pictures of her everywhere in the Arab world, and they don't think very highly of her.

Any updates on CACI, the military contractor, which played a major role in enabling the torture?

1) Most people have not seen the real picture of her at AG. the one wher she is giving the thumbs up. In that picture what they don't show you is the guy she is pointing to is being forced to masturbate

2) While she enjoyed what she did I am more interested in finding out who gave the orders

Did she ever apologized for her part in that travesty? Didn't think so. It's not my fault, I was ordered is not a good enough excuse.

Lynndie has stated that her problems are the fault of the (liberal) media, who are at fault for reporting the Abu Gharib incident.

If they had just not reported it, there would be no problem, right?

People, PEOPLE! It's a set up. Watch out! The riight will blame anti-war crowd for threatening Lyndie England and accuse them of being hypocrites for using same storm trooper tactics they claim the so called Town Hollerers are guilty of.

Freedom Works internal polling has probably shown all the screaming and disruptions are now counterproductive, so before a REAL debate on health care can start, we need a distraction.

BINGO: The brown shirts on the left won't let this poor (convicted) veteran speak. Change the subject.

Just like the GOP Senator from Georgia who put the end-of-life counselling provision in the Senate version now recants and it sounds like Grassley is also doing verbal judo on his comments on the same provision.

It's another set-up.
